"Salome at the Prison," Gustave Moreau, c. 1873-76.
Moreau (1826-1898) is perhaps the emblematic Decadent painter; he's name-checked in Huysmann's seminal Decadent novel, "A Rebours," published in English as "Against Nature."
The concept of the femme fatale was a favorite of the Symbolists (the Venn diagram of Symbolist painters and Decadents is almost a perfect circle) and Salome was a favorite of Moreau. In the 19th century, she was depicted as the ultimate predatory female, and the idea that she was in love with John the Baptist and sought his head in revenge for spurning her was born in that era; it's not Biblical.
Anyway, Moreau's lush paintings are a joy to behold; the rich colors and lavish details are fascinating to examine.
From the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo.
