"Yellow Roses in a Vase," Gustave Caillebotte, 1882.
I've talked about Caillebotte before, so I'll just remind real quick that he was a wealthy art collector who became a legit artist himself.
His first significant still life, this is a great composition. The idea itself is very minimalist, but at the same time, it's beautifully detailed in its depiction of the roses, and captures that moment when the roses are just starting to lose petals but are still lovely.
Caillebotte must have felt an attachment to this painting; it remained in his possession until his death, when it passed into the hands of Edgar Degas.

"Sunflowers Along the Seine," Gustave Caillebotte, c. 1885-6.
Caillebotte (1848-96) was a wealthy art collector and an accomplished artist in his own right. Educated as a lawyer and engineer, he inherited his father's fortune in 1874 while studying art and quickly developing an accomplished style of his own.
He was a patron of the Impressionists and one of their number, although using a more realistic style than most of them. He turns up in Renoir's "The Luncheon of the Boating Party," in the lower right, in sleeveless shirt and hat, ogling an oblivious burly man similarly dressed on the right side. Yes, Caillebotte was gay, it seems, and he featured nude or seminude men in his work with a perspective strongly hinting the erotic gaze.
Here, though, he simply gives us some sunflowers by the riverside, with a narrowboat on the water. A pleasant summer scene. Happy Flower Friday!

"The Boulevard Seen from Above," Gustave Caillebotte, 1880.
Born into the upper class, Caillebotte (1848-1894) was most noted as a patron of the Impressionists, rather than a painter himself, but he had talent. He painted more realistically than most Impressionists, but he was still one of them while being a collector of their work.
He did a number of paintings of various views from his studio window, and also had an early interest in photography as art. Some critics view his work as painted snapshots, and there's a vibe of that here.
He was also known for his paintings of men, which has led to a general assumption that he was gay, although there's little concrete proof. I always think of Renoir's "Luncheon of the Boating Party," where Caillebotte is depicted in the lower right, in a sleeveless shirt and straw hat, gazing wistfully at a strapping guy on the other side, also in a sleeveless shirt and straw hat. No question in my mind.

Dziś w historii sztuki mam dla Was drugi w ostatnim czasie (i w ogóle) follow-up do wpisu, który zamieściła na swoim fanpejdżu Minerva. Ta wczoraj pisała u siebie o "Cykliniarzach" Caillebotte'a. Łapcie więc inspirowany tym obrazem komiksowy kadr.
