So, according to the president of the "Shooters Union" if "law abiding gun owners™" are forced into a gun buyback scheme it will only create a black market for guns.
He points to the black market in tobacco as an example.
Firstly that's complete bullshit. Far more people smoke than own guns, and you don't "own" tobacco, you consume it. Hence the thriving black market.
Also, he's basically saying that if his "law abiding gun owners™" can't buy guns legally they'll buy them illegally.
That is an argument to confiscate ALL of their weapons for NO compensation, criminal charges and possible jail time.

In the lead up to the Victorian and especially the NSW state elections we're gonna hear One Nation whine about any new gun laws coming after "law abiding gun owners!"
Well one of the Bondi massacre shooters (the father) legally owned all of the guns he had that day.
So, essentially, you're a "law abiding gun owner" until you're not.
Then, there's the fact that gun arsenals on farms are targets for aggravated burglary like that happened in Tasmania recently.

What you wil not get is how #Australian gun laws work (whatever their merits). Nor will you learn a lot about the facts purportedly supporting statements made by the author of the article (I am assuming the author can back up all his claims here - innocent until proven … well you know the rest).
From my perspective, the more we talk/read/hear about gun laws in Australia the better informed we’ll all be. And that makes all the difference when it comes to deciding what our polies ought to do about it and where our votes should go. But, it must be *informed* discussions, not dubious opinions.

A #shooting at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in southern #Idaho on Saturday afternoon left multiple people dead & others injured, police said.
The shooter was among the dead, Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said in a news conference. Police were still trying to determine the shooter’s identity & motive.

I sympathise with your frustration John (not just about gun laws) and agree that while #Labor has moved its legisaltive agenda through parliament, there is little in it to establish any kind of ‘legacy’ for the #AlboPM govt. Not least of which is in Firearms legislation. Apart from knee-jerk useless quick-fixes around the edges, especially from States and Territories.From my perspective, any Federal ‘umbrella’ legislation to tighten up gun laws in Australia will run afoul of States and Territories govts. Case in point: though agreed by all jurisdictions, the Federal Gun Register proposed by the Howard govt is still to be delivered (and from an IT perspective, this is a no brainer). How then can any PM even think national gun laws are possible? Imagine the shit fight that would ensue were legislation to be tabled in Canberra to licence and control all 3D printers.
On the contrary, meaningful gun control law reforms must be undertaken by the States and Territories with the Feds providing guidance and funding — because funding is the elephant in the room, for all enforcement services. Not just those policing legal gun ownership, but border control, criminal intelligence, and gang taskforces, and then some. To put it into perspective, how long has our society been waiting to get gambling adds banned?
Any changes to gun laws/processes/regulations require cooperation and coordination at all levels of government together with sustained budgets adequate to the tasks. In our dreams…
I believe the idea that terrorist massacres, DV and Gang murders, can be prevented just by reducing the number of guns that can be legally owned is laughable. Our gun laws may be in need of reform to keep them relevant in changing circumstances like any other law, but if you cannot effectively police them no legislation is going to make any impact at all. Just as no amount of policing is going to prevent illegal speeding on our roads or drunk driving — the later a loaded gun. In the end, society as a whole (not a tyranny of the majority) must want more policing and more effective gun controls if not an outright ban. NSW is, from memory, the State with most (legal) firearms and most por-gun voters. So, NSW is where it must start. But while Minns is in control you can forget it because he is out of his depth on this one IMO.

Investigators found a shrine in Colt Gray’s bedroom to Nikolas Cruz, the shooter in the 2018 massacre at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, prosecutors said.
An investigator testified during Colin Gray’s trial that he had been aware that his son’s #MentalHealth had deteriorated & sought help from a counseling service weeks before the #shooting, citing anger, anxiety & volatility. But the father never followed through on getting help for his son.

Gray, who was 14 at the time of the shooting, was charged as an adult with 55 total counts, including #murder in the four deaths & 25 counts of aggravated assault.
Investigators testified that the teenager carried the rifle onto the school bus with the barrel wrapped in a poster board. They said he left his second-period class & emerged from a bathroom with the rifle, shooting people in a classroom & hallway.

Unlike a negotiated plea deal, in which a defendant often pleads guilty in exchange for an agreed-upon sentence & possibly reduced charges, sentencing is left entirely to the judge. The judge decides the sentence after hearing each side’s summary of the case, evidence & sentencing recommendation.

A jury in March convicted his father, Colin Gray, on charges including second-degree murder & involuntary manslaughter, & he is scheduled to be sentenced next week. Prosecutors said the elder Gray gave his son the assault-style rifle used to open fire at the school.
Teachers Richard “Ricky” Aspinwall, 39, & Cristina Irimie, 53, & students Mason Schermerhorn & Christian Angulo, both 14, died in the #shooting. Another teacher & 8 more students were wounded, 7 of them hit by gunfire. -
Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm is now expected to hear each side’s summary of the case, evidence & sentencing recommendation before deciding the sentence.
Gray’s trial had been scheduled to start in mid-October in Columbia County, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) from where the #shooting happened, after the judge agreed to a defense request for a change of venue.

Come on #AustralianInstitute you can do better than this:
“The answer to gun theft is simple: if there are fewer guns in the community, there are fewer guns that can be stolen”
That is a complete nonsequiteur for so many reasons. I know you are pushing an agenda: towit we don’t want to follow the US into #GunCulture violence. And I agree with that proposition. But what your headline suggests is not the answer, not by a long shot.
As long as there are ANY guns, ANYWHERE (Privatly held, in police and ADF armouries, and with distributors and manufacturers) there WILL BE Gun theft. Volume matters little given stolen guns is a criminality issue not a gun ownership issue, nor a gun law issue. And crims will steal, import and manufacture guns regardless (we’ve seen all this already). And BTW, do we even know how many unregistered guns are stolen/lost?

Police responding to the call at about 10:35PM found 8 people with gunshot wounds: four boys ages 6, 7, 12 & 14; two women, ages 21 & 25; & two men, ages 33 & 37, the NYPD said.
