According to Metro police, a friend who was visiting 81-year-old Johnnie Thompson told officers that Thompson was demonstrating how to use a Derringer pistol when he dropped the gun on the floor, which caused it to discharge.
Authorities reported that Thompson was struck in the chest and taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.
