This is a more informative and well written opinion on the #Bondi massacre which does provide ‘new’ information (we’ll eventually get to read what the other five, redacted, interim recommendations are I hope). It’s important to know what is and what is not under consideration for recommendations.

I have to say (because Tom McIlroy’s article is not a well written opinion piece — perhaps due to space limitations, still…) I am supportive of strict #GunLaws but even more so on the ability of the #Police to enforce them.
Taking a helicopter view, what is urgently required is $$$ to fund both a #NationalBuyBack and sufficiently staffed #FirearmsRegistries to enable better control and oversight of #GunOwnership. Anything else is fiddling on the margins and largely political in intent. BTW, in so far as a national registry is concerned, Tom is happy to leave it at ‘speedier progress’ is being made. It’s been progresing since #PortArthur mate. Do you think you could mention that? Apparently, according to Tom, ‘Smart public service minds’ have been totally incompetent and unable to find the right Consultancy to get it done. My take? It’s about #Power, #Control and $$$$ throughout the federation govts.
To be clear, Gun Laws in Australia are up to the job, especially if periodically reviewed to close loopholes and include new firearms technology (E.g. Slide-loaders, grey guns and printing) BUT they should be nationally consistent (Currently they are not, not by a long shot — pun intended)
McIlroy tosses a lot of numbers around but they mean nothing unless they can be shown to correlate with criminality and terrorism data (such data correlations ought to be done anyway). Similarly, he dismisses the QLD Police Minister (see article) without further comment. Tom obvioulsy thought it irrelevant to his argument. — which is what exactly? Not sure from this piece which concludes that nothing so far has been done to keep the community safe. Gee what an insight, thanks for that.
Here is the link to the article if you wish to read it, but really, there’s nothing much in there to take in. It’s a rehash of what’s already been written many times already. Oh, and a whole lot of frightening gun numbers if you not anxious enough.

#Trump told Faux News on Sunday: “I heard about the New London situation, & I wish they would have told us about it a little bit, but it is what it is. We had a great group of people there last night. They were strong, & the Secret Service, I thought they were outstanding. They stopped him cold.”
The New London Police Department declined to comment but said it would provide a statement later today.

Cole Tomas Allen’s brother notified the New London Police Department in Connecticut of the alleged manifesto, which Allen had sent to his family members minutes before the incident Saturday night, the White House said. A White House official said Allen’s family then notified police, also minutes before the incident took place.

Ofcls said they were still gathering details at the crime scenes south of downtown #Shreveport — the 2 homes & a 3rd location. Some of the #children shot were related to the suspect.

In his article for The Point, the vice chair of Gun Control Australia and a lawyer Roland Browne concludes:
“Australia is now moving to review gun laws, jurisdiction by jurisdiction. The “genuine reason” requirement remains very good public policy. What is needed is refinement in the evidence necessary to satisfy the firearms registration authority as to the bona fides of the applicant, and to ensure that each firearm that is acquired can equally satisfy the registering authority as being for good reason.
If this is achieved, it will further enhance public safety, especially in combination with a series of other reforms that are coming down the line throughout Australia. If not, the number of unnecessary guns in the community will continue to increase, along with the risk to public safety.”
In NSW, the proposed reform goes further, mandating citizenship, membership of a gun club, mandatory club shoot participation and reporting, as well as caps on the number of firearms based on validated reason stated on the licence.
But the biggest stumbling blocks remain. 1) A need for one single National Firearms Register, 2) the need for uniform national licensing laws/regulations and most importantly 3) more funding and effort on getting unlicenced firearms off the streets nationwide.

And I agree with that.
I do not know where the Australian Sports Commission get their data from, presumably from olympic discipline feeder parts of gun clubs, but I suggest that this data is limited and not representative of all club membership and their activities.
The author also relies on information from the QLD SSAA which in no longer a Branch of the National SSAA, a point glossed over by the author, and hence does not represent the rest of the country in terms of rifle shooters within the national SSAA’s ambit. QLD have long been unrepresentative of the rest of Australia in many ways, especially in terms of gun ownership which is seen as a right up there (I’m generalising here as well due to lack of data).
What seems to emerge from this article, is that the author commits the same errors our NSW govt committed, a lack of complete and open minded consultations with all affected parties before making up their minds as to what needs to be done. Had the author spoken with the National SSAA, the article would have a different tone and different conclusions, and gone some ways to strenghten Australia’s gun laws rathr than ‘thrashing’ them outright.

Hmmmm… the Australia Institute should get their ‘sports’ shooter licence data from firearms registries, not sports associations. That data will show that there are strict reporting compliance levied on firearms licences one of which is that a number of gun club competition participation per reporting season is required to maintain that licence.The author also fails to identify the source of the data used to support his arguments beyond the nebulous ‘official sports participation’ data. Heck, the author isn’t even identified. Disappointed in Australia Institute for releasing this headline-like vacuous ‘Press Release’.
Prove me wrong and I’ll apologise. Remember…there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Having said that, I will agree that there are a lot of things which ought to be done to make gun ownership safer, the obvious one is to legislate a single set of national gun laws and regulations and establish a single national firearms registry properly staffed and funded. One law, one registry, one set of compliance orders. I’ll be dead before that happens I’ll bet.

It seems to me that the public discussion on #firearm control would better be served if govts released the documents or transcripts of meetings and the information they have gathered to help them come to their decisions — there’s something going on, otherwise all States would come out with the same data that would inform pretty uniform decisions nationally. Instead we, yet again, have different #gunlaws in different jurisdictions. Oh…and guess what, the #NationalFirearmsRegistry Howard legislated for, well we’re still waiting for that and likely to wait a long while yet, if we ever get one.
So, either govts did not consult widely nor gathered the facts and acted on politcal gut feel, or there’s power (aka money) behind the decisions and nothing to do with keeping guns out of the hands of #Crims and #NutCases.

The tragic #TumblerRidge #SchoolShooting in #Canada reminds me of both the #WaffleHouse shooting and the #ChristmasBombing in #Nashville.
In those cases, like in Tumbler Ridge, the perpetrator had a history of #MentalIness and local or federal #police knew of their possession of #AssaultWeapons and/or explosives.
In Tumbler Ridge and the Waffle House cases, police confiscated *and then returned the guns* that would later be used to murder multiple people.
