20 Great Punk Pop Songs You Should Hear Right Now
Punk rock in its various eras and iterations was and sometimes still is known for its rage and costuming more so than for its timeless tunes. Yet, even early on, punk bands were as interested in putting across memorable melodies as much as any pop group that came before them. In fact for some, the whole point of punk was to apply a factory reset to strip away the excesses of rock to restore the elemental magic of rock ‘n’ roll. This certainly included tuneful songs with sets of hooks as opposed to complex arrangements and endless soloing that were often just distractions.
Aggression played its part within that back-to-basics approach, of course. After all, whoever said that anger and sarcasm couldn’t also be tuneful? No one said that happiness and enthusiasm couldn’t also be crunchy and snarling, either. If it was good enough for Ramones, Buzzcocks, and The Undertones, it was good enough for a whole raft of punk pop bands that followed them, writing songs that balance rough edges with catchy melodies, and rage with joie de vivre. Here are 20 such songs in no particular order that perhaps escaped wider exposure across a span of decades and eras. They help prove that punk could be just as whistle-worthy for the pop music fan as any genre!

The Sound of the Suburbs by The Members
Contrary to punk rock’s reputation for tales of grim urbanity, The Members present their most well-known song from 1979 as a kind of punk “Pleasant Valley Sunday” instead. The pop hooks came right along with that, with a singable chorus, a touch of surf guitar, and even a barb or two at young neighbourhood punk bands who can’t play very well. Decades later, bands like Green Day and The Offspring would traverse similar paths, continuing to find plenty to rage about in suburban environs.

“All I Want” by The Photos
Raging paeans to teenage alienation and youthful lust was as good a place to start as any when it came to classic punk pop even from its earliest period. Teenage hormones haven’t changed all that much, seeming to pair nicely with the sound of crunchy guitars. This cut from English new wave quartet The Photos (née Satan’s Rats until 1979) from their self-titled 1980 debut record is an anthem to all that. It presents a deceptively intricate arrangement that’s still all about immediacy in every sense.

“Tell That Girl to Shut Up” Holly & The Italians
The debut 7″ single from Holly Beth Vincent and her band of Italians captures the charm of radio-friendly pop music cut with punk rock attitude. Holly and the band took to the road abroad, touring with The Clash and The Selecter before she was deported back to New York. Her papers not being in order aside, the live appearances in Britain helped to make this December 1979 single a charting song in the UK. This tune had legs beyond that era, later covered by Transvision Vamp in 1988.

“Boys Boys Boys” by Nikki & the Corvettes
Punk rock has a reputation for anger and cynicism. But it’s also a celebratory musical form, which is why pop hooks and pop themes aimed at teens fit so well into it. This is where rock ‘n’ roll as a social phenomenon began, after all. Detroit’s Nikki & the Corvettes take up the mission on this deep cut from their 1980 self-titled debut record. It’s a tribute to adolescent fun and romance—a theme song for those for whom summer days seem to go on forever rather than for those brooding over thoughts of no future.

“Let’s Shake” by Teenage Head
Hamilton Ontario’s Teenage Head are a Canadian institution, with this song being a local hit if not a world-beating international number one single. The song is a highlight from their 1980 (quite a year for early punk pop it seems!) album Frantic City. It mixes Ramones-like drive with a simple and effective central riff to fuel a downright danceable groove to accompany singer Frankie Venom’s spitfire barbs. This cut seems to set a petulant attitude against a universal call to let loose all at once.

“The Earthquake Song” by The Little Girls
With the band hailing from L.A., this song deals with a very L.A. theme. Legendary radio station KROQ championed The Little Girls’ hit song at the height of new wave as a local favourite. Considered something of a regional novelty hit at the time, this tune sits on the blurry borders of power pop and pop punk, rocking all the way in a kind of amped up Spectoresque girl group meets The Beach Boys meets The Slits style. Full of pop sparkle and not just a little bit of irony, the song featured on their 1983 Thank Heaven EP.

“Happy All the Time” by The Flatmates
Bristol-based The Flatmates’ 1987 single is pure primitive punk pop. Like this song itself, the band behind it came in with a roar and left the scene not long after without cutting an LP. This was not before making punk-inspired sounds comprised of rudimentary but effective instrumental hooks, with this song leaning more into Sixties sunshine and optimism than jaded Eighties irony. The band reformed with a new lineup in 2013 and cut their self-titled debut in March 2020. Better late than never!

“In the Summer” by Fastbacks
Seattle’s Fastbacks featured this song on their 1990 record Very, Very Powerful Motor. By this time, they were part of an emerging scene that was just about to explode in their city that found bands mixing pop hooks with aggressive playing in various ratios. Who knew how far it would go? In the meantime, the joy of summer so celebrated in pop music history is presented on this cut by songwriter/guitarist Kurt Bloch and bassist/vocalist Kim Warnick with an ironic and even sarcastic sneer.

“We Only Come Out at Night” by The Sugar Stems
Milwaukee Wisconsin’s own The Sugar Stems take cues from Seventies and Eighties new wave while also channeling Sixties beat group energy into a surge of aggressive yet ear-friendly pop music free of any one era. This 2014 track is the almost title song to their second LP, combining New York attitude (sneering lyrics) with Midwest nice (effusive music). This nocturnally-oriented anthem really does let the sunshine in despite its lyrical protestations to the contrary.

“The World Has Its Own Ideas” by The Buccaneers
If a musical sugar rush can also be described as bludgeoning, than surely this cut from The Buccaneers serves as exhibit A. Adding in disparate textures and instrumentation that diverge from traditional rock guitars-bass-drums dynamics, it adds in the standard hey! hey! hey! to keep it rooted in firmly punk rock soil. The song features on the band’s 2012 record Guide Me Home.

“American Jesus” by Bad Religion
Even with a pop influence creeping in, punk rock did not lose its political edge when it came to commenting on the state of a nation. Punk pop architects Bad Religion issued this anti-jingoist missive in 1993 after the first Gulf War and numerous other U.S. led global conflicts besides. Featured on the band’s seventh record Recipe for Hate, the song rails against violence dressed up as holy wars to cover up base instincts for greed and appetites for domination. Listen closely for Eddie Vedder on backing vocals.

“Leave it Alone” by NOFX
As hooky and tuneful as punk pop can be, irony plays an important role in how it comes off in the same way that earnestness does for power pop. Punk pop pioneers NOFX apply a heavy dose on this song from 1994’s knowingly titled Punk in Drublic. This cut touches on the impulse not to question anything and to maintain the status quo no matter how dysfunctional and harmful it is. It’s hard to not apply this same irony today when the status quo is a source of endangerment to many.

“Static” by Irish Handcuffs
Just to undercut expectations a bit, Irish Handcuffs is actually a three-piece punk pop band from Germany. Their dedication to melodic punk rock goes beyond any national borders, certainly including this track taken from 2012’s Stubbs EP. The song is an energetic burst of joyous glee while exploring a concern for another who is feeling exactly the opposite. Just forgive yourself comes off just as rageful as any punk rock demand, even as full as it is with empathy.

“The Cult Song” Shannon & The Clams
Oakland California’s Shannon & The Clams perfectly capture a proto-punk sound that is more 1966 than 2007, the year they formed. On this cut from 2011’s Sleep Talk record, they intone the key takeaway line from Tod Browning’s Freaks (“one of us, one of us …”) along with several dollops of gutteral ooga-booga, baby for good measure. There’s a distinct surf rock meets garage R&B quality to their particular brand of pop punk, with this song providing the perfect soundtrack for escaping an ashram.

“In This Diary” by The Ataris
The simple pleasures of youth and the struggle of growing up is a vital dichotomy that is easily found in a lot of punk pop, a musical form that represents both sides better than most. This tune from Indiana’s The Ataris featured on their 2003 record So Long Astoria is about the moments we experience as young people and the unique privilege of being aware that they won’t last. This makes them that much more important to celebrate. The rage here is of a joyful persuasion.

“Freakin’ U Out” by Antarctica Vespucci
Who said that power pop bands had the sole ownership over feeling awkward and insecure when it comes to their object of affection—or obsession? American punk pop and indie rock band Antarctica Vespucci carry that point of view into this punkish crash of sound that lays its twitchy and sleep-deprived narrator’s heart on their sleeve. Featured on their 2018 sophomore album Love in the Time of E-mail, this tune of insecurity may be an awkward love song or a something that’s a lot darker. You decide!

“Without Love” by Descendents
Pioneering the form since the late 1970s, Manhattan Beach California’s Descendents helped to set the standards and definitions for punk pop for those who followed. After bursts of creative energy intermingled with a few hiatus periods, this tune features on their 2016 record Hypercaffium Spazzinate. It finds them in prime form as punk pop elder statesmen with a song that proves the struggle goes on to rage and hope against the forces of despair. This tuneful punk rock provides the fuel to get where we’re going.

“Olive Garden” by Pup
This cut from Toronto band Pup is a noisy story song about awkwardness, poor social skills, tragedy, bad timing, and mediocre suburban Italian food chains. What’s more punk rock than that? Appearing on 2025’s Who Will Look After the Dogs?, this song is a reiteration of The Members’ assertion that many and even most punk rock stories unfold in the most banal of places. The heroes of those stories are often far from heroic. Yet this isn’t necessarily cynical. In fact, it’s kind of comforting.

“Goodtime” by Be Your Own Pet
Coming back after their initial 2003-08 run, Nashville Tennessee’s Be Your Own Pet confront one of the arch enemies of punk pop on this cut taken from 2023’s Mommy record—maturity. Luckily, they do it with a blast of spiky and melodic rage while being dragged kicking and screaming. As the song demonstrates, being a parent and a mortgage holder does not stamp out the punk rock fires in one’s heart anymore than it does the spirit of youth that started one on the punk rock path in the first place.

“Growing Up” by The Linda Lindas
With an average age between them that barely scraped the upper teens at the time, the looming presence of adulthood hits a little differently in this title cut from the young band’s first full-length record from 2022. This tune proves that their generation are more aware of their journey as young people to adulthood than ever before—because they’re facing it together. Like The Atari’s tune listed earlier, there is wisdom behind the effervescent crunch and crash of guitars and drums.

Punk pop was spurred on by the impulse to return rock to the original intentions of rock ‘n’ roll, capturing tunefulness along with edginess and delivering it with youthful vigour. The best examples reminds listeners that even in it’s earliest days, rock ‘n’ roll was about being young and having to navigate a world that’s often socially rigid, counterintuitive, or even hostile. Examples abound from The Coaster’s “Yakety Yak” to Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues” and onward. But it was also about celebrating the state of being young and full of pent up energy, too—rage and joy being equal parts.
