I'm going to start growing a forage blend of grasses for my guinea pig. I'm going to get 3 or 4 cat litter trays and grow patches of grass in them for her to munch.
Hopefully she likes it. She's very difficult to please and is definitely the bully of the household.

[EVERYONE IS OK]
I just arrived home from running some errands, and opened the front door to find a significant amount of blood spattered in the hallway and loungeroom, all over the curtain and front window, and floors. There were dog foot prints through it all.
My first thought was that Poppy had gotten the cat.. they have a tentative truce, largely because Poppy is terrified of Lilith (who is tiny, but her name absolutely fucking fits!) and usually freezes, stares, and trembles if she catches sight of Lily. So I threw the dogs outside, grabbed the flashlight and started looking everywhere for Lilith.. to finally find her sitting in the cat hide on my housemate's desk, half asleep and judgingly watching whatever nonsense I was up to.
The guinea pig is fine, and completely unreachable.
Both dogs seem totally OK.. not nicks, scratches, marks. No blood anywhere on their bodies or fur. I guess they could have tussled and one of them might have a bit tongue or lip that I can't see bleeding.. but their mannerisms around each other are completely normal as well, which is the weird part. When they've had a bit of a scuffle in the past (they've only been together 6 months, and they're both rescue dogs with the trauma associated with that), they've been stand-offish with each other for a couple of days afterwards.
I have no idea what's going on. And honestly, I'm wondering if someone got into the house and was chased out after being bitten.. because that seems more likely than anything else at the moment.

This little arsehole looks like butter wouldn't melt. Well, let me tell you the truth!
Each morning she gets a treat, she has a jar of them with 5 or 6 different varieties, and I pull one out of the jar and offer it to her.
If I don't pull the right one, she sniffs at it and then bites my finger.. not hard, but just enough to get the point across that I'm shirking in my duties and to pick another fucking treat before someone gets hurt.
This morning none of the treats were right. I ended up throwing a berry one into the cage from a distance and running into another room. I'm currently huddled in the bottom of the closet under a pile of coats (not really...).
She's bullying me. She weights less than a bottle of milk.

He's weighing in at 653g this morning (pre feeding), but when I went to get him out of his cage he was wandering around, drinking water, and chewing at some parsley... which is a huge behavioural change for the better!

CW: Sick pet guinea pig Discussion of impending pet death
I think that Socks is dying. He's pmuch stopped eating the crit care I'm syringe feeding him, his breathing is changing, and he seems switched off compared to how he normally is. He's also down to 720g in spite of 2nd hourly feedings (10g of crit care each feed) and constantly having access to fresh soft fruit and vegetables. He is still picking at the fruit and vege a tiny bit, so I'll keep giving him that.
He doesn't seem in pain at all.. he just seems like he's folding into himself. It's very similar to how Beau (our old dog) got in his last couple of days.
So I'm going to stop the crit care feeds because they're not nice for him, I'm going to keep up with the soft fruits and vegetables because I think he's enjoying them. And I think he's going to die in the next couple of days.
If he shows any signs of pain or discomfort I'll take him to the vet to have him put down.. but he always finds trips to the vet stressful and I don't want to do that to him, and everyone there loves him so I don't want to put them through that either.
Thank you for everyone who has given advice and support and help with him being sick.. it's been a long few months and I really appreciate the support here.

I just took Socks in to the vet again. This morning he was grunting with his breathing and didn't look comfortable, so I called the vet and asked to bring him in thinking he was going to be euthanased.
The vet saw him and noted that his teeth have gotten super long again, so as a "hail mary" we're going to cut them down again.
Having his teeth cut down might help with his feeding, because he hasn't been eating the syringe feeds they were just pooling in his mouth, which is why I decided to stop them yesterday. If we can get him to actually accept the feeds then he might start putting weight on again because he was going well for a while there..
The vet has kept him in, is putting him in a humidicrib and giving him crit care feeds and a glucose iv as support care for the teeth trimming, because his temperature was really low due to not getting any food on board.
I burst into tears at the vet because I thought we were going to have to put him down.. the vet was really nice about it too.
Also, have some waiting room kittens.

I had Socks at the vet again today, just for his progress check.
She's happy to continue how we've been going, with syringe feeds every couple of hours. He weighed in at 780g (her scale always weighs him a bit lighter than mine), and she gave him a good check over. His stomach is still soft and fine, his mouth and teeth look ok, his heart sounds great. His breathing was a little quick, but we think it was more to do with the stress of a waiting room full of dogs than anything else because I haven't noticed him breathing quickly otherwise.
So, the plan is to continue with how we're going now and check in again in early January.
In other cavie news.. Pikelet is off to the vet in the morning to be desexed. I've just packed her a little lunchbox with snacks, and I feel like I'm sending her off to her first day of kindy 😆
It's important to have female guinea pigs desexed before they turn about 2 years old, because they start developing ovarian cysts and cancers due to their hormone levels if they don't have litters.

This little guy has finally broken 800g, weighing in at 817g this evening.
I'm not quite counting it as a win yet, because we still have a couple of hundred grams left to go, and because this was his evening weight after his feeds today.. his morning weight was 760g this morning.
Also, he has a touch of bumble foot on both front paws, which I'm treating with saline soaks.
He has another vet appointment next week.. I'm still hoping I may be able to cancel it.

The boy weighed in at 806g this evening, which is the highest he's been so far.
Fingers crossed that it's because he's putting weight back on, and not because he's just impacted with poops.. his tummy still feels soft and he's still running around like nothing is wrong though.
I'm going to have to give him a bath in the morning, because his fur is caked with food from the syringe feeds, and he looks like a rough and unkempt little guy.

She's doing well. She has a bald belly with a big suture line. She's snoozing and snoring so loudly I can hear her from across the room.

Socks is back.
His front teeth have been burred down, and his back teeth don't look too bad. So the vet thinks it might be a bit of arthritis in his jaw.
Because guinea pigs are smol and therefore have smol kidneys (or pigneys as we call them), regular pain meds aren't really an option.
The plan is to see how he goes over the next couple of days, and maybe get some pain meds if he isn't starting to pick up weight.. so fingers crossed that this was the solution and he starts chomping hay again!

🐹SOCKS UPDATE🐹
We went to the vet again this morning, and she gave him a complete looking at.
There are no outward signs of illness, other than him losing weight (he weighed in at 792g there), lethargy and soft poops.
His teeth don't quite line up, but she said that shouldn't be causing this amount of issue, especially because the back teeth are fine.
His chest sounds clear, his heart sounds great. His abdomen is soft and fine. His temp is normal.
Her thoughts are that we can either:
1. treat symptoms with some probiotics and critical care feedings, with the idea that it might be a bit of a stomach issue and the probiotics will get everything back online properly2. take bloods, which would cost $275 and might not tell us anything at all
We're going with option 1 at the moment..
I've made another appointment for 2 weeks time, and have started him on a twice daily dose of probiotics and a twice daily feed of critical care (which he would like everyone to know that he absolutely fucking hates)
If he starts going further down hill I can call and take him in for the emergency clinic type appointment like today.

Socks isn't eating properly and is losing weight again.. He's down to 817g. He looks like it's taking him a lot of effort to chew and that it's not working properly (I don't know how else to explain it), he seems interested in food but then gets tired of chewing. Other than that, he doesn't seems sick.
I called the vet and they can't help because they don't get to see guinea pigs often (when I took him last month they had a locum from Sydney who saw him). They suggested another vet in town who "does all the guinea pigs".
I called them and they don't have an open appointment open for over a fortnight, but they suggested I bring him in to wait "like an emergency department".. they said they can't tell me when I'll get seen, and I'll probably be waiting for hours, but I will get seen at some point.
So, tomorrow I'm popping him in the carrier and taking a book and some snacks (for us both), and we'll be in the vet waiting room from 8am.
..and then in Saturday I'm planning on not being able to do anything because of the pain of sitting in a waiting room chair for hours.

Oh my Lorde, the chaos.
We've got a storm passing through at the moment, and I was out when it hit.. so I got home to a dog that's panicky and attaching herself to my leg for comfort.
While dealing with her I was trying to get the cats inside (Lilith is still outside because she's obviously holed up somewhere warm and dry and is too clever to leave where she is.
I then had to run out in the hail because the ghosts on the front lawn had become untethered and I don't want them blowing into traffic and causing an accident.
I came back inside to try and get the ghosts past a clingy dog who is scared of them but more scared of the lightening and thunder, and a cat who is vomiting hairballs in the hallway.
We're having rolling power outages, it's still hailing, the side yard is flooding (it happens when it rains), and I've just noticed that the lid to the bin is open from when I was cleaning the guinea pigs this morning, so that's going to be filled with water.
Chaos. Absolute chaos.

He had a bit of a nibble, but stopped.. but also its hot here and he's just wanting to stretch out in his hide and nap.
