Folgendes funktioniert also tatsächlich: man erstellt sich im modernen im #UEFI Modus installierten Betriebssystem (zB LMDE7) ein Desktop Icon, das den Befehl sudo efibootmgr -n 001A und dann einen reboot ausführt. Dann fährt der Rechner wieder runter und startet Windows 7 im #MBR Modus. #efibootmgr listet auch die Hardware #GUID des SATA #controller Dies kann man sich mit #grep im Befehl greifen. Damit wird das resistent gegen Änderungen in der Nummerierung.

Every time I generate a UUID I feel a little bit guilty about "using up" one of the 2^128 id's

Ich habe herausgefunden, dass sich die #UUID / #GUID eines #USB Sticks verändert, wenn ein Adapter oder Hub genutzt wird. Ich möchte den Stick für #Unraid tauschen, die Lizenz hängt an der GUID.
Mein Mac Mini M4 erkennt den Stick jedes Mal anders, je nach USB-A auf USB-C Adapter oder USB-A auf USB-C Hub.

Ich war bisher der Meinung, die UUID ist fix (der Unraid Support aber auch)

Hey #email #nerds and #ServerAdmin people, I know about #DMARC, #SPF, and #DKIM and stuff. BUT.

Idea: system where email servers generate a #GUID identifier for that specific email and keep it in a database. Other servers and email clients can then just ping the #domain that the email says its from and confirm the real domain sent it.

Like, why couldn't this be a thing? Seems like it would completely stop those #spam emails that pretend to be from #PayPal or #banks.

Guid Version 7 in .NET 9 introduces a new way to generate globally unique identifiers (GUIDs) based on timestamps and randomness, making them more suitable for relational databases. Unlike the non-sequential GUID v4, GUID v7 reduces index fragmentation, improving database performance.

there seems to be a lot of excitement for #uuidV7 these days (timestamp-based). it's very cool, and a good choice if you're using the #uuid or #guid as a database key (to avoid fragmentation)

i also really like #ulid for this, and they can be converted to uuids/guids easily and quickly.

one thing i don't see many people talk about when they move to monotonically incrementing ids (like v7/ulid) is this: if you have a distributed database you will end up with poor balancing with these ids. not what most people do, i guess, but it's something to think about.
