Wenn das Wasser steigt oder: Revolution als Vorbereitung
Ich denke wahrscheinlich mehr über Überschwemmungen nach, als ich sollte. Früher war das nicht so, aber jetzt schon.
Ich habe etwa fünf Jahre lang in einem Landprojekt im Westen von North Carolina gelebt, das in einem kleinen Tal an einem flachen, trägen Bach gebaut war. An den meisten Tagen stieg das Bachbett um gut zwei Meter über den 15 cm hohen Wasserstand, der normalerweise darin floss. Auf fast allen Karten waren wir überhaupt kein #Überschwemmungsgebiet. Auf einigen waren wir eine hundertjährige Überschwemmungsfläche, was bedeutete, dass das Wasser etwa alle hundert Jahre über die Ufer treten und die Felder überfluten sollte.
Das Problem beim Klimawandel ist, dass nichts so funktioniert, wie es sollte, und die #Überschwemmungen wurden immer schlimmer, höher und häufiger. Wir holten Inspektoren, um unsere Bachläufe zu begutachten, und die schüttelten meist nur den Kopf – nichts funktioniert mehr so, wie es sollte, und die Lösungen, auf die wir uns im 20. Jahrhundert verlassen konnten, würden im 21. Jahrhundert nicht mehr funktionieren.
In Erwartung der einmaligen #Jahrhundertfluten (oder sogar kleinerer jährlicher Überschwemmungen) bauten die Leute ihre Hütten und stellten ihre Wohnwagen auf Plattformen und Stelzen, aber alle paar Monate rückte das Wasser einen Schritt näher an die Fußböden der Menschen heran.
Ich wünschte, ich könnte dir sagen, dass ich hoch auf dem Hügel hinter dem Grundstück gebaut habe, weil ich ein guter Vorbereiter war, dass ich dieses Problem vorausgesehen und Maßnahmen ergriffen habe, um mich und mein Zuhause zu schützen.
Das wäre aber gelogen. Ich habe dort gebaut, wo ich gebaut habe, weil ich ein seltsamer Introvertierter bin und eine Hütte im Wald wollte, von der aus ich keine anderen Häuser sehen kann. Das bedeutete, dass ich jedes einzelne Teil meiner Hütte mit der Hand den Hügel hinaufschleppen musste. So ist das eben.
Ich denke über Überschwemmungen nach, weil ich schon zu viel Zeit in ihnen verbracht habe, als ich durch Wasser watete, das ich nicht hätte durchwaten sollen, um Geräte aus der Scheune zu holen.
Wir stecken gerade in einer Sackgasse in der amerikanischen Gesellschaft, in vielen Bereichen, aber die #Katastrophenvorsorge ist einer davon. Für Einzelpersonen oder sogar kleine Gemeinden kann ich Ideen anbieten wie: „Baut auf einem Hügel, nicht im Tal“ oder „Sorgt für eine ausreichende Entwässerung eures Hauses“. Ich könnte dir raten, eine Axt auf dem Dachboden aufzubewahren, wie es die Leute an der Golfküste tun, damit du, falls du jemals auf deinem Dachboden eingeschlossen bist, ein Loch in das Dach schlagen kannst, um zu entkommen, wenn das Wasser dich erreicht.
Ich könnte dir raten, dir zu überlegen, wie du von den Fenstern deines Hauses auf das Dach gelangen kannst. Ich könnte dir raten, Sandsäcke bereitzuhalten, um sie mit Erde zu füllen und Türen zu blockieren. Ich könnte dir raten, nicht durch stehendes Wasser zu fahren. Ich könnte dir sagen, dass Elektroautos ironischerweise besser durch hohes Wasser fahren können als Benziner (obwohl du trotzdem nicht durch #Hochwasser fahren solltest).
Ich könnte dir sagen, dass du nicht durch Hochwasser waten sollst, um deinen Schnapsvorrat zu retten, den du unter der Scheune versteckt hast, und ich kann dir das sagen, weil ich glaube, dass ich das Foto, auf dem ich genau das mache, von meinem Instagram-Account gelöscht habe, das ich vor Jahren auf meinem Tinder-Profil hatte. Da das Foto weg ist und es keinen Beweis dafür gibt, dass es jemals existiert hat, kann ich dir sagen, dass du das nicht tun sollst, ohne wie ein Heuchler zu klingen.
Ich kann dir sagen, dass du eine Notfalltasche bereithalten sollst, und während ich das hier tippe, denke ich darüber nach, wie ein Paracord mit den richtigen Knoten dein Leben retten könnte, da so viele Menschen Überschwemmungen überlebt haben, indem sie sich an Bäumen und Schornsteinen festgeklammert haben. Ich kann dir sagen, dass Rettungswesten spottbillig sind und es sich lohnt, sie zu Hause zu haben.
Ich kann dir all diese einzelnen Schritte nennen. Aber es sind einzelne Schritte.

One of the first things my father taught me when we started camping in the 1960’s - never set your camp near a river. Go to the high ground. You never know what the weather conditions are like up river. A sandy dry riverbed can become a raging torrent.

Dalton Rice, the city manager for #Kerrville, #Texas—who also spoke at the press conference—said that the catastrophic #FlashFlooding happened because the skies “dumped more rain than what was forecasted” on 2 of the river’s forks.

If you really believe in loving your neighbor (James 2:17), you’ll stop treating disaster relief like a tweet and start funding levees, first responders, and evacuation plans. Until then, your piety is just another hollow ritual.

" 'Within 45 minutes, the #GuadalupeRiver rose 26 feet and it was a destructive flood - taking property and sadly lives,' he said in a news conference on Friday.
"He read out a statement from all-girls Camp Mystic, where about 750 children were attending, saying there had been a 'catastrophic level' of flooding, and informed parents that if they have not been contacted, their child is accounted for."

Driving all over the South Bay area this morning and I am not liking what I'm seeing. The #GuadalupeRiver is really high compared to yesterday. And it was high then.
Under normal circumstances, the Guadalupe River is a small stream. Under drought conditions it's barely a creek.
This river runs through the middle of downtown San Jose. Hoping that all of the improvements made will save the neighborhoods next to it down there.
