We're thrilled to have FOUR contributors joining us for Google Summer of Code this year. They'll be helping us on a range of projects from refreshing the Wagtail bakery demo to boosting our translation operations for the Wagtail Localize package.
To learn a little bit more about our contributors and what they'll be working on, head over to our blog: https://wagtail.org/blog/contributors-for-google-summer-of-code-2026/

The 2026 #GSoC journey is just getting started.
Over the coming months, contributors will extend tools, introduce new features, and support long term neuroscience projects. We will also share contributor spotlights and project deep dives.

Great kick-off call with our GSoC 2026 mentors and students this week! 🎉
Everyone introduced themselves, and the students presented the projects they’ll be working on over the summer. Lots of exciting ideas ahead for Joplin 🚀 #GSoC #OpenSource
-
Why does GSoC matter for Neuroscience?
Because open-source tools power modern research. Contributors improve reproducibility, scale data analysis, build shared infrastructure, and connect research with clinical applications.Read more: https://lnkd.in/dKyNZDe5

Some very talented newcomers to FreeBSD are working on #GSoC projects - MPLS, Capsicum, network kboot, embedded systems incl NanoBSD and ESP32 development work, live kernel patching, netlink, & Bluetooth improvements!

Another great community effort all round.

I kind of hesitated with posting about it here but I'm happy to announce that my project got selected for this years #GSoC under the @typelevel organization!
Over the course of the project I will be prototyping a port of Cats Effect and FS2 for the #Wasm/WASI platform. Support for WASI by #scala compiler(s) is still experimental and I think this is the first time an I/O-heavy library is being ported there

Wow. I'm *so* glad that I've been using Tumbleweed for a decade or more. But I may have to stop recommending openSUSE. Because I can't condone putting ANYONE through "AI-powered onboarding".
Just cut that shit out and give people a proper onboarding guide!
The OpenPrint "AI-powered portal" seems equally dumb on the face of it for causing hallucination-driven issues when people are most in need of accurate information.
And it's disappointing to see that the Summer of Code is being used to integrate slop generation into Drupal.
I'm just hoping that DigiKam is basically doing a nice, sensible embedding-based search.
It's great that people want to get involved. I just wish that they all wanted to (positively) contribute.

Many join GSoC, few sustain impact since 2011 with 20+ projects most years. At INCF, projects do not end in August, they evolve into tools, integrate into ecosystems, and keep serving neuroscience.

In this year's GSoC GNOME will mentor 6 new contributors! Congratulations!!
They will be working on things like implementing native uninstallation support to App Grid, enabling recovery from GPU resets and more!

-
KDE will mentor twelve projects in this year's Google Summer of Code.
Broaching from classics like Okular, KStars and digiKam, to new arrivals such as Drawy, Mankala, and keepSecret, we look forward to a productive summer with, lots of learning and lots of commits.
-
Thank you 🫶 to everyone who submitted a #GSoC proposal to work with us over the summer! We received 190 proposals and it’s been really tough to narrow it down to the 3-6 we are able to provide mentors for. We’ll hear from Google on confirmed projects next week - looking forward to it!

#TIL that European Summer of Code is a thing! Great initiative and nice to see also the presence of so many good open source projects participate as mentors.

🤮 Gotta love the old white men (it's always old white men) slinging slop advertisements for their current and former employers on the Google Summer of Code mailing lists.
:notAI: There is literally no sacred space where they won't spread their sycophancy for billionaires' latest project to pillage public resources and disempower society.

After years, we’re still revisiting a new #GSoC proposal to implement #NURBS functions in #Blender, another ambitious project. I’m skeptical: wouldn’t it be better to leverage existing tools like FreeCAD’s #OCCT kernel and wrappers such as PythonOCC, which already provide ready-to-use solutions? A native implementation would require advanced mathematical and programming expertise, which a beginner (still learning C++) would struggle to master in just a few weeks of development. #b3d #CAD

Hello! I am new to Google summer of code and I'm wondering if anyone knows how the application process works. I opened the website this morning and the button is still grayed out, but it also seems like I was supposed to be emailing the organizations already from their video. Where am I supposed to start? 😅 #gsoc #developers #blog #programming
