What to tell you, really? It was a glorious, sunny May 1st when I lugged my brand new pastel mint green cabin bag up a steep hill in the Swiss Alps.
Its wheels were of course useless on the gravel and it occurred to me a backpack would have been much more practical – just as it had occurred to me on another trip this summer, our short cruise to Sweden to be exact, that walking endlessly long passenger boarding bridges would have been exactly the sort of place to bring my cabin bag! Instead, I’d haphazardly packed a random shopping bag like I was just popping to the store next door. The bag only grew heavier and heavier as the trip progressed.
The irony was, I already knew our Swiss destination, Gruyères, was situated on a hilltop and was going to require some hiking to get to. I’d been there before. You’d think I would have taken that into account when packing?
Besides the inauguration of my pristine cabin bag and its perfectly neat wheels, pre-gravel, what more is there to tell you about this trip, really? I hesitate to point you towards my old posts about the same destination, because their silliness makes me cringe. Does that ever happen to you?
So let’s talk, instead, about what had changed since our previous trip to Gruyères ten years ago.
Well, first of all, we had kids this time which changed pretty much everything. Besides this little fact, I can with confidence announce to you that the cows hanging out on the hills of Gruyères no longer had cow bells. Disappointing, yes. Deal-breaker? No. They still continued chewing grass, calmly as ever. If they’d been French cows, they’d have gone on strike!
Also, the cows had obviously been moved out of the way of a new (?) parking lot. The village’s tourism looked more commercialised now, and Switzerland in general was way more expensive than I had remembered. The trains were more crowded, too, leading us to quickly deboard one just before it left Zurich for the Alps, my heart pounding as I counted the members of my family on the platform outside, Home Alone still fresh in my mind as we’d watched it last Christmas. I did, however, end up forgetting my cardigan on the train, but better cardigan than kid!
At one point, we ended up paying 7 euros for a half-liter water (there always comes a point on any trip when you’re just too thirsty to care) and generally just lost money with every glance, step, and breath we ventured. Glad it was only a weekend trip!I think there were chickens last time, too, though probably not the same ones. Come to think of it, I have no idea how long an average chicken lives. Maybe the chickens remembered us and are at present drafting a post about how much we’d changed!
It really was a glorious spring day in Gruyères. The sun so gentle, so yellow, its setting a symphony for the soul. Cheesy, yes – but this was Gruyères, after all.

Dans le village de #Gruyères, il y a aussi le musée #Giger, assez étonnant à trouver en ce lieu (HG Giger, l'astiste qui a imaginé #alien) avec son bar très original.Fun fact : ce musée est juste à côté du musée tibétain, avec une atmosphère de sérénité qui contraste.
