It looks like his motivation as a writer was fueled by imagining his readers emotional reaction and surprise. When the saga became successful and everyone talked about it his steam slowly ran out of fuel.Such a pity! He's one of the few writers fully capable of mixing intrigue, action, humour, psychological insights and suspense.

I just finished reading the "Dance of Dragons" part of Fire and Blood (the part that's being adapted as a TV show under the name "House of the Dragon.")
A few thoughts (with as few spoilers as possible - no plot spoiler, just structure, pace, etc)
1. I loved it. I hate the expression "page turner" but it really was. I had trouble putting the book down more often than not.
2. However, while interesting, the format (a "history book" not a narration in the usual acceptation of the term) makes things less developed than they could have been. Especially some characters are pretty paper thin and most are more developed and way more interesting in the show (mostly Alicent and Viserys - I was surprised how little importance they have in the book).
3. So, I actually love how the TV show takes the time to develop many characters much more than they are in the book. And I don't mind any of the changes, they all make sense in my opinion (I'm not sure why GRR Martin was annoyed about some changes the other day.)
4. However, now, I understand some book readers being upset that "nothing happens" in season two. I disagree with them, many things happen, and once again, I love how the show takes time to develop and show all the things it does (okay, Daemon spends many a little too much time at Harrenhall waiting.) The concern I now have is how the show will cram so many events in only two seasons, as it's supposed to be four seasons. Some major battles will have to be skipped or I can see several battles being merged into one. (which will make angry more fans who don't understand how adaptations work)
5. I'm a bit worried about the ending of the show. I wonder how they'll manage to end the show in a way that's not anticlimactic (even in the book, the end of the civil war is a bit anticlimactic already, but it's not the end of the book, just the end of that section of the book.)

So, I've been reading Fire & Blood. I really like it. But...
Let me explain...
I've reached the end of Viserys's reign, and I'm wondering if I should continue reading for now.
Some context:
I started reading it because some idiots online heavily spoiled one major plot point of House of the Dragon (I've never seen anyone freely spoil Games of Thrones, why is it that apparently House of the Dragon is fair game?) and I didn't want to be spoiled more. (It's something that hasn't happened on the show yet - apparently Joffrey already spoiled it in season one or two of Game of Thrones, but I didn't remember it, it's just a throwaway line)
I liked the beginning of the book (Aegon the Conqueror, Maegor) and I loved the tale of Jaehaerys's reign. I really felt that the characters were as fleshed out as the format allows (not a narrative in the traditional sense of the term, but a "history book") and his story was really compelling.
But then, I found the reign of Viserys's quite underwhelming and somewhat expedited. On the other hand, I loved the character of Viserys in House of the Dragon, he's probably one of my favorite Westerosi characters from the TV shows.
None of the other characters (appearing on the show) are really fleshed out in the book. (except maybe Corlys and Daemon, but barely)
I found the contrast with Jaehaerys's story quite jarring.
So am I biased because I saw the show first and the characters are obviously more developed in the show? And in that case, maybe I should stop reading the book until the show ends and hope I don't get spoiled more in the meantime (that's four years)
Or did you also find a real dip in quality during Viserys's reign, but it gets better after? Maybe GRR Martin was not that interested in him and rushed to get to the juicy parts, and the Dance of the Dragons is really well written and worth reading first?

I've reached the end of Viserys's reign, and I'm wondering if I should continue reading for now.

I started reading it because some idiots online heavily spoiled one major plot point of House of the Dragon (I've never seen anyone freely spoil Games of Thrones, why is it that apparently House of the Dragon is fair game?) and I didn't want to be spoiled more. (It's something that hasn't happened on the show yet - apparently Joffrey already spoiled it in season one or two of Game of Thrones, but I didn't remember it, it's just a throwaway line)
I liked the beginning of the book (Aegon the Conqueror, Maegor) and I loved the tale of Jaehaerys's reign. I really felt that the characters were as fleshed out as the format allows (not a narrative in the traditional sense of the term, but a "history book") and his story was really compelling.
But then, I found the reign of Viserys's quite underwhelming and somewhat expedited. On the other hand, I loved the character of Viserys in House of the Dragon, he's probably one of my favorite Westerosi characters from the TV shows.
None of the other characters (appearing on the show) are really fleshed out in the book. (except maybe Corlys and Daemon, but barely)
I found the contrast with Jaehaerys's story quite jarring.
So am I biased because I saw the show first and the characters are obviously more developed in the show? And in that case, maybe I should stop reading the book until the show ends and hope I don't get spoiled more in the meantime (that's four years)
Or did you also find a real dip in quality during Viserys's reign, but it gets better after? Maybe GRR Martin was not that interested in him and rushed to get to the juicy parts, and the Dance of the Dragons is really well written and worth reading first?
