Most lux-to-PPFD converters use one fixed number (like "lux ÷ 67"). For grow lights that's wrong — lux follows eye sensitivity, which barely sees the red and blue plants need.

The real factor depends on the lamp's #spectrum. I measured several: from 11.6 (#HPS) to 98.6 (blue+red) — an 8.5× spread no formula can cover.

So I built a calculator: set the spectrum, enter lux, get PPFD. Free, no signup.

Potted on some cabbage starts that overwintered under my #GrowLights. Just curious to see if they grow or if they just bolt in the end. 🤔 Is EXPERIMENT.

I also washed/sanitized seed trays and sowed two different kinds of beets, which take a while to germinate and are destined for the #lowtunnel.

I cant wait for #spring - I'm betting it will be early! 😅

Long shot, but here it goes. I'm looking for good grow lights with white light for plants in my living room, preferably to be used in a classic EU fitting. There's sansi , but that's US based and has to be bought through Amazon in Europe for as far as I could find.

Anyone tips for good grow lights (not cheap shite that's flooding our online shops) that can be bought without having to go to Amazon?

Dear Friends of winter pansies,

The robin who guards our garden worms (and probably eats them) helped me plant 8 (thought I had seven) Lidl pansies. Still £1.99 for 10 - so bought 20 again. Bit of colour for autumn onward

Also found some strawberry mint growing amongst the wild geraniums in this pot before I sequestered it. That is being planted under our indoor grow lights lights.

They always grow really good when you're not ready to plant them out. This is all the squash, cucumbers, and melons. Everything good except one watermelon pot and I put more seed in it tonight in case the half sprouted thing doesn't grow a true leaf. They were all planted about 2 weeks ago.

Tomato progress. So far nice stocky tomatoes since I've been able to keep it cool. The round pots are a mix of my experimental soil that killed all but one of the peppers.. 🤣 and some more recycled soil. The saved Campari seed ones are doing good and might be far enough along to pick a winner. Might pull a few and transplant if I get to it soon. The tomatillo is doing good too.

Tomatoes and tomatillo thinned to one, and the 2024 Gravenstein scion wood rooting attempt had lots of leaf. I put a little rooting hormone in the water but it's old so I've ordered some new. The cuttings are bagged and off to the side so they're not getting full light.

All saved tomato seeds from last year have sprouted up and the tomatillo seeds I gathered from the ground in the garden a month ago are up too. Heat mat turned off. They were started on April 1.

First tomatoes are up, peppers are growing fast, and some new growth on the overwintered Red Marconi sweet pepper that I pruned and fertilized.

Basil is looking good, I've kept a loose cover over it so it's not drying out fast. Peppers are starting to grow fast with roots seen in the smaller pots and the latest transplants in the big pots aren't dying so maybe not over fertilized but we'll see.

The geraniums are greening up slowly after being under the lights for a week. I've turned the lights down some since the lettuce seemed to be suffering as it got taller. The grape cutting from last year that had a verbena I saved in it is growing fast! The saved Red Marconi isn't doing much but I haven't fertilized or pruned it either. The Red Marconi and Jalapeno peppers, or chilies, are getting their first true leaves. The California Wonder 300 are all up 100% from last years bought seed, 100% dud on saved seeds. I'll have to make sure to grow one of them well into a non green color for seeds.

I put the lettuce starts in larger pots. Divided the romaine since I had a couple of pots that didn't sprout. The seeds were planted about 3 weeks ago but it's cold in the basement so growing is slow.
