PENLAN: Man jailed for stabbing victim in the neck with a bicycle wheel spoke
Daniel Pridmore, of Primrose Court, Heol Emrys, Penlan, appeared at Swansea Crown Court via prison videolink, having pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon.
39-year-old, Pridmore, had been involved in an altercation with the male at nearby flats before the violence spilled out onto the street in front of passing pedestrians and motorists.
Prosecutor Robin Rouch told the court that on the afternoon of April 1 this year, Pridmore and the victim Jude Picton had been among a group of people inside a flat on Griffith John Street in the Dyfatty area of the city. He said “something took place” in the property that left both men with injuries.
The violence spilled into the building’s communal areas, where Pridmore armed himself with a spoke – one of the thin metal rods that connects a bicycle wheel. The pair then moved out onto nearby High Street, bringing their confrontation into full view of pedestrians and passing traffic.
A witness described seeing Pridmore thrust the broken spoke towards Mr Picton’s neck in a “punching motion”. The prosecutor said there was “no doubt both men had taken intoxicants”.
One member of the public placed himself between the two men in an attempt to halt the violence. Despite Pridmore directing threats at both the individual and their family, the bystander stood firm.
Officers who responded to the scene found Pridmore behaving “erratically”. Both men were initially arrested.
Mr Picton was taken to hospital where he received a tetanus jab, though his wounds did not require stitches. He later declined to provide a statement to police, telling officers he was “fearful of the repercussions”.
The court heard Pridmore has racked up 51 previous convictions spanning 75 separate offences, among them possession of a bladed article, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, robbery, and common assault. His most recent conviction, for public disorder, came in 2025.
The court heard that after five years without offending, during which Pridmore had managed to free himself from drugs, he entered a relationship with a woman who was herself a user. Mr John described it as a “co-dependent relationship” during which Pridmore became a victim of domestic violence and fell back into substance misuse.
The advocate said his client was concerned about “negative influences” in Penlan and that family members including his mother were working to arrange accommodation for him outside the area.
Judge Walters said he had read reports in which Pridmore expressed a desire to change his life. He told the defendant it was to be hoped he could turn his back on a way of living that had so far “ruined the first few decades of your life”.
With credit for his guilty pleas, Pridmore was sentenced to 21 months in prison. He will serve up to half the sentence in custody before being released on licence to complete the remainder in the community.

Swansea: Dyfatty man sentenced for stamping on unconscious neighbour’s head
James Christopher Grenfell, of Croft Street, Dyfatty, Swansea, was handed a 38-month prison sentence at Swansea Crown Court after pleading guilty to attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm with intent.
Judge Huw Rees told the court that Grenfell and the victim had been friends and neighbours prior to the incident, and that whatever words were exchanged inside the flat had led to the complainant suffering a beating.
The judge described Grenfell’s decision to stamp on the man’s head as the victim lay unconscious in the doorway as a “shocking loss of temper”.
Grenfell received a 20 per cent discount on his sentence for his guilty plea. He will serve half the 38-month term in custody before being released on licence to complete the remainder in the community.
Prosecutor Helen Randall told the court that on November 17, 2024, the victim visited Grenfell’s flat in Swansea to check whether he had left his keys there the day before. The two men sat down together and began drinking whisky, with nothing appearing to be wrong between them.
Later that day, another resident in the block arrived home from work and heard shouting from inside Grenfell’s flat. The neighbour heard the defendant yelling words to the effect of “don’t say anything about my kids” and “I’m going to f****** kill you”.
The neighbour dialled 999 and opened his front door to find the complainant lying unconscious in the doorway of Grenfell’s flat. He then witnessed Grenfell stamping on the victim’s head and stepped in to stop the attack.
The victim was taken to hospital where medical staff recorded a “reduced level of consciousness” along with extensive swelling, bruising, and soft tissue damage across his face and head. The prosecution said the victim had sustained additional injuries but it was not possible to determine how those were caused, and the case was brought solely on the basis of the head injuries resulting from the stamping.
The court heard the complainant has no memory of anything that happened after sitting down inside Grenfell’s flat.
Grenfell was arrested on the day of the assault and gave “no comment” responses throughout his police interview. He initially denied responsibility and the case was listed for trial in February this year, but that date had to be vacated due to a lack of court availability. A fresh trial date was scheduled for September, but Grenfell subsequently changed his plea to guilty.
The court heard Grenfell has four previous convictions covering six offences. These include three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm from 2001 and 2020, as well as possession of a bladed article and possession of cannabis from 2025 – offending which took place after the flat assault.
David Singh, representing Grenfell, accepted there could be no justification for what his client did. He told the court Grenfell had struggled with alcohol, drug, and mental health issues for many years but had been responding well to the sentence imposed in 2025 and had been making progress.

Morriston man jailed for life after murdering his brother in brutal attack at Clase home
41‑year‑old Darren Steel was told he will serve a minimum of 20 years for killing 48‑year‑old Martin Steel at the victim’s home on Hill View Crescent, Clase, in May 2023. He was also sentenced for two separate assaults committed in the days before the murder.
A jury at Swansea Crown Court found Steel guilty of murder on Tuesday after rejecting his claim that he acted in self‑defence. Today, Judge Geraint Walters said Steel had launched a “frenzied” and “out‑of‑all‑proportion” attack driven by “uncontrolled rage” fuelled by drink and drugs.
Judge: ‘You intended to silence him. To kill him.’
Sentencing Steel, Judge Walters said he was sure the defendant intended to kill his brother during the assault in the early hours of 20 May.
He said Steel had “tailored” his account to fit the evidence and had done “absolutely nothing” to save his brother’s life after inflicting the fatal injuries.
The judge told him:
“Your intention at that moment in time was to silence him. To kill him. That was born from uncontrolled rage which was a consequence of the cocktail of drink and drugs you had voluntarily consumed.”
He said Martin had been subjected to a “horrific beating” in his own home and was left to die in an armchair, where he was later found by his mother.

In a deeply emotional victim impact statement, Martin’s mother, Diane Steel, described the moment she found her son’s body as “the day my life changed forever”.
She said:
“Every night when I close my eyes to go to sleep I see Martin slumped in his chair, beaten to a pulp and covered in blood. Completely unrecognisable. Murdered at the hands of his little brother.”
She told the court she had “lost both my children in this tragedy — to death and to prison”, adding that she would now face her final years “without either of my boys by my side”.
Daughters describe trauma of losing their father
Martin’s daughters, Natasha and Surrie, also read statements describing the lasting impact of their father’s death.
Natasha said her father’s murder had left a trauma that “has never left me”, adding that he was not there to walk her down the aisle — something she had imagined all her life.
Surrie described her father as “funny, kind and charming”, saying her children had lost a grandfather and her baby daughter would only know him through photographs.
She said Steel’s conduct during the trial “sickened” the family and that he had shown “not an ounce of remorse”.
A pattern of violence in the days before the murder
The court heard that Steel’s violence escalated in the days leading up to the killing.
On 18 May, he tied a man — Julien Samuel — to a chair with parcel tape, repeatedly punched him, forced his thumbs into the man’s eyes and held a hunting knife to his throat. The following day, he assaulted him again with the help of his brother.
Steel was convicted of grievous bodily harm against Mr Samuel and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against his then‑partner, Dawn Begley, at an earlier trial. He received concurrent sentences of three years and one year for those offences.
Judge Walters described Steel as a “career criminal” with a long history of violence, saying he was “punch‑happy” and had a “very real propensity to use violence which is indiscriminate”.
Police: ‘The ultimate betrayal’
South Wales Police said the case had caused “significant” distress to the family and the communities of Clase and Morriston.
Detective Inspector Stuart Prendiville said Steel had committed “the ultimate betrayal” against his brother and caused further anguish by forcing the family through two trials.
He said:
“Darren Steel is a violent and dangerous individual and the life sentence and minimum tariff of 20 years is wholly justified in this case.”

The murder shocked neighbours in Hill View Crescent, who raised the alarm after seeing Martin’s dog running loose outside on the morning of 20 May. When knocks on the door went unanswered, they contacted his mother.
She arrived to find her son slumped in a chair, either dead or close to death. Steel, heavily intoxicated, had given police a false name when arrested and later lied repeatedly about what happened.
Judge Walters said the grief caused to Martin’s loved ones was “irreparable”.
Steel will serve at least 20 years before he can apply for parole. The judge said it may be that he is never released.

Detectives say the teenager has been charged with Section 18 Grievous Bodily Harm and possession of a bladed article on school premises. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Swansea Magistrates Court today.
It comes after officers revealed that injuries initially described as “non‑stab injuries” have now been confirmed as stab wounds following detailed medical assessment.
‘Victim being supported after traumatic event’
Senior Investigating Officer DCI Matthew Briggs said the early description of the injuries was based on “preliminary information” available at the time, but specialist enquiries have since confirmed the wounds were caused by a blade.
He said the victim — understood to be a member of staff — is continuing to receive support as they recover from what police described as a “traumatic event”.
The school went into lockdown on Thursday after the incident, with pupils kept in classrooms while officers secured the site. Staff were praised for their calm and professional response.
Increased police presence to continue
Police say there will be a higher‑than‑usual presence around the school and surrounding area over the coming days to reassure pupils, parents and staff.
Officers will also be working with local secondary schools next week to offer support and guidance.
The school is expected to reopen as planned on Monday, with the headteacher previously telling parents that safety measures and wellbeing support will be in place.
A community still reeling
The incident has shocked Milford Haven, with parents describing the lockdown as “terrifying” and pupils reporting a heavy police presence around the site.
It follows two days of intense speculation online, which police have repeatedly urged the public not to fuel while the investigation continues.
This latest update confirms the most serious charge available for an assault of this nature, signalling the gravity of the incident and the scale of the ongoing investigation.
