LISBON–I traveled here to speak at my ninth Web Summit conference in Europe via another EU city that I’m quite fond of, Barcelona. The Mozilla Foundation had the good taste to host its Mozilla Festival there and then provide me with a travel stipend to cover the event, so of course I was willing to start my Web Summit trip a few days early. Even though that left me little time at home between working a 15-hour day Tuesday as an election officer and then heading to Dulles Airport Wednesday afternoon.

PCMag had two stories under my byline this week, and this was the one I actually wrote this week to cover an update to the built-in Google navigation in one of Polestar’s battery-electric vehicles. The other involved my editor updating a post I wrote in May about President Trump withdrawing his nomination of private astronaut and payments billionaire Jared Isaacman as NASA administrator, the new plot twist being that Trump had changed his mind again and had re-nominated Isaacman. I realize how confusing that last sentence can look.

Two years after getting an introduction to the Swedish startup Candela’s battery-electric hydrofoil sport boats on the San Francisco Bay, I enjoyed an update of the experience on waters I know much better–the Potomac and the Anacostia. With a longer word count than I had for that PCMag report in the summer of 2023, I went into much more detail about Candela’s ambitions to get into the passenger-ferry business, its likely competition in that market, and potential obstacles to electrifying ferries.

The City of Victoria is seeking input on a new #EBikeShare system that will add to travel options for both residents and visitors.
Members of the public can let the city know where they would like to see #EBikeParking zones situated by adding virtual pins to a digital map by Sept. 24.
When the #BikeShare system launches — the plan is for a 2026 start — e-bikes and helmets will be available in the designated parking zones for rent through a smartphone app.
E-bike trips will start and end only in the zones.
The public can consider placement in locations near existing bike lanes and key destinations, as well as in easy-to-access spots around intersections.
The city has 44 kilometres of bike routes in place and more on the way.
“Bike share aligns with the city’s goals around mobility, sustainability and equity,” the city said in a statement. “It provides more affordable and clean #transportation options for people while also supporting a strong #tourism industry in Victoria.”
As of 2022, about one in three trips in the city has been made by walking, cycling or rolling, the city said, which is one of the highest rates in #Canada.

Last week Financial Express reported that Indian Railways gears up to launch first hydrogen train by March 31, 2025 [1].

With limited resources, I believe India is doing its best towards sustainable transportation. The fact that this train, developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, India, has a 1200-horsepower engine (reportedly the most powerful of its kind globally) demonstrates a remarkable leap forward in indigenous technology. If successful, this could pave the way for broader adoption, particularly on heritage or hilly routes like Kalka-Shimla, where environmental preservation is a priority.
