The #GreenMan was not a #pagan symbol but a post pagan christian meme effectively, symbolizing that god's nature was bigger than us and no matter what we did, we couldn't change it. We need a modern upgrade, the barren man. #Technology has made it so we can tame and control the green man, domesticate him to our detriment, kill him with our abusive extractive system. Until we free him and stop abusing him, the green man will become the barren man because we were terrible stewards of the earth #solarpunk #environment -

Ancient #Celtic #FireFestival Marks Beginning of Summer

"Thousands of people gathered for the #Beltane Fire Festival, a Celtic ritual dating back to the Iron age, on Edinburgh’s #CaltonHill on Thursday evening, April 30.
Close to 10,000 people attended the festival, which is intended to mark the beginning of summer.
The modern version of the festival has been running since 1988, according to its organizers.
After a dramatic stage performance signifying the inception of summer, the #MayQueen and #GreenMan spark the birth of summer by lighting a huge bonfire.

I bumped into the #GreenMan at the pub on Friday. He was taking a break from his important botanical duties, and was out dancing in the street with the lads of the #EynshamMorris.
I was able to thank him personally for bringing us such a spectacularly beautiful spring this year.

Folklore's Green Man has long fascinated me, as a gardener/landscape architect, but also since I read a book connecting him to Santa Claus (??)
