360 degrees, divide by 24 then 60, gives 0.25, and sun half a degree wide.
2 minutes, then.
So I was driving north on 1 right at sunset, perfect timing, north on a stretch that had the whole Pacific laid out to the left.
Clear sky so the red ball of the #sun slid down, bumped the flat line of the ocean, then slowly sunk beneath the waves.
No traffic.
Glanced left. Steered. Glanced left. Steered.
At the last moment, I am pretty sure I saw a #greenflash at the sun's upper limb.

Now this was just a perfect capture. Spotted off the California coast, in between the red sky and the blue sea, the rarest of colors the sun blesses us with: the "Green Flash".

I was outside and noticed that Venus was right above the horizon. I had some time so I decided to watch it set. It hovered above the horizon for a long time but, as soon as it touched the horizon, it was gone in an instant. What's strange is that, right as Venus was disappearing, I could have sworn I saw a little green flash. I know this can happen with the setting sun but can it also happen with Venus?

I've been watching for green flashes at sunrise and sunset whenever the conditions have been right for nearly 50 years, and have seen about a dozen really good ones. This video of a sunset green flash made me gasp with awe. It's glorious to meditate on how many different physical phenomena work together to create this transient, transcendent wonder.
