"In this paper we introduce the Journal of Labor and Society’s special issue on the ecomodernist features of imperialism and argue that these concepts must be theorized in tandem. The introduction begins by showing how ecomodernism and imperialism combine in practice through the example of the Council of Foreign Relations’ ‘Climate Realism Initiative’. It then charts ecomodernism’s emergence as a distinct theory and practice, arguing that it can take capitalist and anti-capitalist forms, both of which reproduce imperialist mechanisms of accumulation on a world scale. The paper’s third section questions the anti-modernist critique of ecomodernism offered by the concepts of extractivism and green colonialism. We then develop what we consider a more precise and rigorously anti-imperialist critique of imperialism’s ecomodernist aspects before concluding with some political propositions about the necessity of what we call a ‘communist ecological critique’ and by summarizing the special issue’s contributions."

Earlier this year, Tó Nizhóní Ání was invited to attend World Water Week 2024 and asked to be on a panel on #GreenColonialism. The #Sámi national youth organization, #Sáminuorra, organized this panel. Given this panel's #Indigenous youth focus, Tó Nizhóní Ání took this opportunity to fund raise and send a delegation of Diné (#Navajo) youth from the Black Mesa region to represent and speak on this topic.

April 27, 2024NEW YORK -- "#FakeGreen projects, the removal of children from their homes, loss of languages, rise of hate speech, and war were among the top concerns cited in the reports by the U.N. Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues as it closed its ten-day session on April 26, 2024.
"The rights of women, the need to protect endangered languages and redress for victims of boarding and residential schools were also priorities in the Permanent Forum's reports prepared for the U.N. Economic and Social Council.

In 2021, the region even became the prospective locale for a drastic intervention that could bring down global temperatures but could also cause cataclysmic disaster — a proposal to dim the sun.
Ebba Busch, Sweden’s deputy prime minister and minister for business and energy, believes northern Sweden could help reduce the speed at which the world is heating up. “Sweden really has the answer to the million-dollar question of whether it’s possible to have very high set climate goals and then at the same time have a strong economic growth,” Busch told me. “The Swedish answer to that is yes.”
There’s a prevailing sense in Kiruna that swathes of this beautiful, resource-laden land should be turned over to industry — sacrificed on the altar of a green transition in order to phase out fossil fuels. But for the region’s residents, the tradeoffs are more complex than simply embracing a more sustainable future.
Environmentalists, Indigenous groups and academics say that what politicians and energy executives are really advocating for is a technofix for the climate crisis: simply trading out one extractive industry for another without challenging the systems that got us here in the first place. And it could bring untold collateral damage upon one of nature’s last refuges in Europe (...)
In reporting this story, I met climate scientists, mining executives, Sami leaders and Swedish politicians. Among them, I found no absolute heroes or true villains. Everyone was searingly aware that the climate is in danger, but each person had drastically different ideas about how to fix it.

As far as conjectures go, here are my two cents: I hope I'm wrong but personally rn I'm worried about the coming 180°, as in statist #ecofascism proper.
It won't be long before the ongoing #climate #collapse becomes something that no amount of state propaganda, bread, circuses etc. can't cover up no more (I give it a couple of summers in the northern hemisphere before they have to make it part of their discourse, that's politics for you).
Then, them fascists fucks will #greenwash their borders and tell us that obviously, since everything else failed we need some enlightened dictator to steward us through the transition, they'll reframe everything we have been screaming into the void for decades but with some Us vs Them spin, renewal of the nation, or the union, or whatever, they'll frame it as "would you rather save your family and your neighbors or some "insert dehumanising label"?".
It will be some bullshit volksdiscourse but green this time and they will make it their mandate to choose who is worthy of access to energy, water and so on, and if it doesn't get to that, it'll "just" be enforcing borders and justifying green colonial wars, in other words: business as usual.
And let's be clear, if our useless hippie parents knew that #ClimateCollapse was coming, so did the think tanks that somehow managed to define most policies for us.
That's why afaic the whole governance/management discourse is cursed and most western state apparatuses and #FortressEuope 's institutions in particularl are 100% compatible with that scenario - almost as if by design...
As a matter of fact what I'm describing is already happening: #GreenColonialism is a reality for the global south and it's normalisation is ongoing (I mean what else is the cybertrucKKK and the whole "we will coup whomever we want" discourse about if not exactly that?)
Tldr; Our ruling class has been preparing for #WaterWars for half a century and I fear that once they are done criminalizing us they will pull one hell of a greenwashed fascist switcheroo.

"Duck Valley Paiute-Shoshone Council Member Addie Parker appealed to the U.N. Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues today, describing the disastrous lithium mining and hydrocarbon plume her people suffer from in northern #Nevada. Parker said there has been extensive #mining here for over 150 years.
"The "new green gold rush" for lithium batteries has brought devastating lithium mining and 'green colonialism.' Currently, there are 70 lithium mining applications in Nevada alone. The so-called 'green' solution actually creates an #environmental nightmare, including the disposal of #batteries.
Parker said there must be a rights-based approach and pointed out that Nevada mining laws are archaic. Paiute Shoshone of #DuckValleyNation opposes more mining and Nevada's new law for increased revenues from mining.
"Since the signing of the Treaty of Ruby Valley in 1863, there has been no mechanism for tribes to share in the benefits of mining. The mining companies are multi-national #corporations and most are from #Canada. They are not required to compensate the people.
"'It violates our Indigenous rights,' Parker said, listing international law violations, including the fre prior, and informed consent as mandated in the UN Declaration on the Rights of #IndigenousPeoples.
President #Biden's order to consult with #tribes is also being violated."Describing the illegal exploration of their resources, she said Paiute-Shoshone children are suffering because of it. 'We can't even get money to build a new school,' Parker said, describing how children are forced to attend school on a #toxic site.
"More than 100 members of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Nation, on the Nevada #Idaho border, have died over the years due to #cancer. It is a large number for a tribe of about 3,00 people, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal. There was one thing they had in common: they all attended the same school on the reservation.
"The 70-year-old Owyhee Combined School, where tribal members have been educated for generations, sits adjacent to hydrocarbon plumes that lie underneath the town, Chairman Brian Mason said. He thinks the school, where drinking water was once #contaminated by the plumes, is the root of the problem.'"

I read "Uprooted" by Steve Toase. It's an imaginative story with a dystopic green future, where industrialists plant trees everywhere but make sure other plants are sterile. It's an interesting look at monoculture and homelessness. It's the first time I've seen arborists as the bad guys.
