  4. #Urban #WildlifeCorridors Help Mitigate #Climate Effects

    Kyle Chan February 26, 2025

Excerpt: "#GreenCorridors offer a promising start to mitigating these urban issues, allowing cities to naturally lower temperatures through evapotranspiration, a plant process that releases water vapor to cool the surrounding air. Increased vegetation will also allow more hazardous particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to be absorbed, reducing greenhouse gas concentration and improving air quality.

"#Columbia’s second-largest city, #Medellín, launched a green corridor initiative in 2016. Since then, environmental planners there added rows of vegetation along the most polluted avenues, maximizing the amount of CO2 intake from their $16.8 million investment. Maurício Correa, a researcher studying environmental engineering at a Colombian University, found that the 8,800 trees planted became effective 'green barriers' against particulate matter and reduced average city temperature by two degrees Celsius.

"Fighting #ClimateChange isn’t the only thing green corridors can do. Historically, #wildlife has rarely been welcomed into urban life, experiencing drastic changes in the #ecosystem. However, nature-based infrastructure can promote #biodiversity and provide animal species with a safe habitat. Green corridors are indeed multi-purpose and flexible. To maximize the limited space in busy cities, green corridors can function as recreational centers, city facilities and much more—all while mitigating climate change.

"Green corridors can be an effective solution for any city anywhere. In #NewYork, the #ManhattanWaterfrontGreenway consists of almost 32 miles of #BikePath lined with various plant species. Urban '#NatureWays' in #Singapore mimic the natural #rainforests by incorporating trees with #canopies stretching across the roads."

    "What Makes A City Green?

"What are green cities? A green city is a city that actively works to foster the health and #WellBeing of its people and the #NaturalEnvironment. Often, we look at government policies, community practices, and infrastructure to determine whether a city is 'green' or not.

"However, the greenness of a city actually exists on a spectrum and is multi-faceted. There is no such thing as the greenest city. The greenest cities in the world are those that are doing more to be sustainable when compared to other cities. The greenness of a city includes the following factors and more:

    - The availability of #GreenSpaces
    - #PublicTransportation options
    - #Bikeability
    - #RenewableEnergy options
    - #CarbonFootprint
    - #Recycling programs

    "What Makes A University Green?

For Unity Environmental University, an essential part of going green was completely divesting from #FossilFuels and investing in renewable clean energy instead. Ultimately, being a green university is about prioritizing sustainability as a core value and guiding principle for the institution.

"12 Greenest Cities In The World

"#Urban areas around the world are striving to become more environmentally friendly as we continue to grapple with the negative effects of climate change. Many of the world’s greenest cities focus on mitigating those effects by minimizing their carbon footprint, shifting to renewable sources for energy, and improving public transportation. Other cities are taking innovative approaches to integrating green spaces and urban farming.

  10. Five Real Life Examples of #Solarpunk?

On this post, I wanted to share some potential real life examples of solarpunk to help get you inspired, and to show that these ideas are potentially possible in real life if we dare to dream big.

    by JBJWrites, April 23, 2025

"Continuing with our Earth Month theme, I’m back to talk more about the genre/movement our world desperately needs—Solarpunk! A genre which depicts humanity, nature, and technology living in harmony. To learn more about the genre itself, check out my Solarpunk Worldbuilding Guide.

On this post, I wanted to share some potential real life examples of solarpunk to help get you inspired, and to show that these ideas are potentially possible in real life if we dare to dream big. However, let there be emphasis on the word potential and the fact that I used a question mark in the title.

Caveat: By sharing these examples, I’m not claiming they are 100% representative of solarpunk values. Indeed we still live in a world dominated by late stage capitalism, so there are most likely flaws in these examples, as they are part of an inherently flawed system. Yet I still decided to share these because they are an example of attempts to go in a solarpunk direction.

I’m also not claiming these are the only examples. If you can think of some better ones, please let me know in the comments."

  12. #NatureSocietySingapore #Rewilding Project

"Would you like to do your part in making #Singapore a greener space and spend some time to soak in the benefits of #MotherNature?

"Our Rewilding Project is one of Nature Society Singapore’s (NSS) signature programmes. This project is in collaboration with NParks’ #OneMillionTrees Movement along the #RailCorridor (North).

"Our main aim is to fulfill the goal of having the Rail Corridor as a conduit for plants and wildlife and also to provide a continuous canopy cover.

"This increases the opportunities to bring back rare species and contributes to carbon sequestration and storage along this stretch of potential green space.

"We are encouraging our NSS members and members of the public to be involved in the whole process of tree planting. These processes involve grass & weed clearance, site maintenance and of course, tree planting."

  18. Time spent in nature can boost physical and mental well-being

    January 2, 2024

"Spending time outdoors in green spaces has been linked with myriad physical and mental health benefits, including lower mortality, according to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Heather Eliassen.

"Eliassen, professor of nutrition and epidemiology, was among the experts quoted in a December 14 Pop Sugar article about the health impacts of nature and being outside. She explained that exposure to green space has been linked to better sleep, lower blood pressure, and reduced risk of chronic disease—likely because people who spend more time in green spaces also report higher levels of exercise.

"'Green spaces can be destinations for walking or bicycling, as well as space for play, and among children, green-space exposure is linked to more playtime and less screen time,' Eliassen told Pop Sugar.

"She also said that spending time in nature has been linked to better mental health and a decreased risk of psychiatric disorders among adults and children.

"'[Time spent outdoors] provides a combination of stimulation of different senses and a break from typical #overstimulation from urban environments,' she said. 'Exposure to green space results in mental restoration and increased positive emotions and decreased anxiety and rumination. Improved mindfulness can result from exposure to green space as well.'

"Eliassen noted that even city dwellers and people who work indoors can pursue and reap the health benefits of the natural world. Spending time in urban spaces like parks and gardens has been linked with improved health, according to Eliassen and other experts quoted in the article.

"'If there are some green spaces a short or medium distance from home, try walking or biking to the green space to get the benefits of exercise while getting [there],' she said. 'Or, find green space you could incorporate into your commute to or from school or work.'"

  19. 8 Cities #Rewilding Their Urban Spaces

by Linnea Harris, Jun 15, 2021

"In the midst of a massive, global loss of nature, cities around the world are finding ways to protect and expand open spaces and '#rewild' their communities.

"Between 2001 and 2017, the United States alone lost 24 million acres of natural area – or the equivalent of nine Grand Canyon national parks – largely due to housing sprawl, agriculture, energy development, and other anthropogenic factors, according to a 2019 Reuters report. Every day, 6,000 acres of open space – parks, forests, farms, grasslands, ranches, streams, and rivers – are converted for other uses.

"Rewilding restores an area to its original, uncultivated state, shifting away from the centuries-long practice of controlling and managing nature for human need. It incorporates both the old and the new, allowing wildness to reclaim an area and/or incorporating new elements of architectural or landscape design, like growing greenery on the facades of buildings.

"The practice of rewilding is frequently carried out in wild areas; many projects aim to restore biodiversity in an ecosystem, often by reintroducing animal species that are high on the food chain, which in turn stabilizes lower species. One of the most famous cases of rewilding is the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park in 1995.

"Cities too have begun rewilding; but, although these were spaces were once as wild as Yellowstone, introducing apex predators to New York City or Tokyo might not be the best method for success. Rewilding in urban areas might instead include reintroducing native plant species, building parks on empty lots, incorporating more biophilic design when building new structures, or simply allowing nature to reclaim space. A major draw to rewilding in urban areas is the proven positive impact of nature on human health – particularly for city-dwellers with less access to outdoor spaces."
