  1. Charles Spurgeon, particular Baptist preacher, considers caring for the ill in a town in economic distress. To understand suffering, climb rickety stairs. Put yourself by sympathy on their bed, suffer and feel the pains.

Many with no patience for “peace and justice” may be better at this ministry of caring than bleeding heart activists.

Kein Witz! Aber auch keine Pointe.

  4. '#GreatResignation' enters third year as #workers embrace AI, upskilling, PwC says
Around 28% of more than 56,000 workers surveyed by PwC said they were "very or extremely likely" to move from their current companies, compared to 19% in 2022, and 26% in 2023.
"The findings suggest that job satisfaction is no longer enough." In order to retain talent and mitigate pressures, Stubbings said #employers must invest in staff and tech platforms.

  6. There's a theme gaining momentum;

from #quietquitting to the #greatresignation... and now 'going it less' (featured in a Guardian report on people looking for easier jobs).

For decades a minority rejected the central #capitalist narrative of working hard for a better life, but this suspicion that #capitalism is not a system with our benefit at its heart is becoming ever more evident.

Unless capitalists can reinvigorate the reward for work narrative & make it true, there may be trouble ahead!

  7. @peterdutoit i think what #climatescientists should do now is a #greatresignation. Stop communicating completely, some may (and have already) consider a career change. As we all know, it’s #jobdone for them and there’s nothing left to say. In fact keeping on talking is detrimental to #climateaction, as it is used by #fossilfuels lobbies to keep on talking and do nothing. I think urgent action is now in #resilience, #community-led lofi #engineering solutions.

  8. Company towns and employers providing "sleeping rooms" in offices is just modern-day #slavery, perhaps with extra steps.

(Yes, I am willing to die on this hill but I will absolutely appreciate any allies who want to join me in my last stand.)

  10. New posting! And another one dealing with me #LeavingAcademia as part of the #GreatResignation. This one has a slightly broader focus - why it's sometimes right to walk away, and that staying isn't always the best course of action. I've a feeling that #careers in #academia will struggle to stand up to scrutiny in this post-pandemic work environment. See what you think (as ever, comments always welcome!)

  11. New posting! This is the latest in the series of postings examining my departure from #academia, and the way that taking part in the #GreatResignation has shaken me out of a torpor that took hold several years ago. #LeavingAcademia

  12. New posting! This one is about how the #COVID19 #pandemic made me - like many caught up in the #GreatResignation - reconsider my career in #academia and target a better work/life balance, especially from a #parenting perspective. Hope you like it!

  13. CW: Long thread/62

Twiddling will only get an employer so far. Twiddling - like all "AI" - is based on analyzing the past to predict the future. The heuristics an algorithm creates to lure workers into their cars can't account for rapid changes in the wider world, which is why companies who relied on "AI" scheduling apps (for example, to prevent their employees from logging enough hours to be entitled to benefits) were caught flatfooted by the #GreatResignation.

  14. Quiet Quitting:

New study develops a scale to measure quiet quitting.

"I do only the work I’m specifically asked to do; just enough to not lose my job.

  15. Repräsentativ stehen [...] #QuietQuitting und „the #GreatResignation“ [...] dafür, dass sich insbesondere Menschen, die nach 1980 geboren wurden, schlechte Arbeitsbedingungen nicht mehr bieten lassen wollen.

  16. The Great Resignation Was Caused by the COVID-19 Housing Boom
    ssrn.com/abstract=4335860
"…the #GreatResignation among older workers can be fully explained by increases in housing wealth. MSAs with stronger house price growth tend to have lower participation rates, but only for home owners around retirement age — a 65 year old home owner's unconditional participation rate of 44.8% falls to 43.9% if he experiences a 10% excess house price growth"

  17. Quiet Quitting:

New paper considers “quiet quitting” - “ceasing to be fully committed to one's job and doing just enough to meet the requirements of one's job description.”

“The quiet quitting movement can also be explained as an attempt by a growing percentage of employees to communicate to employers that the workplace environment is no longer healthy for employees and needs to change.”

  18. Shopify's notorious for shutting down conversations at work. Now they're trying to shut down meetings.

What wasn't mentioned in the Fortune article is that Slack channels deemed "controversial" are being archived without notice. (theglobeandmail.com/podcasts/t)

My source tells me this is mostly lip service.

You can't stop ppl from meeting. Despite the chance that they are unproductive, shutting them down is not only a bad solution, it's also ineffective.

  19. The best thing about telling corporate America to figure it out themselves and going off on my own as a creative mercenary... is that I only have to take jobs I want to take.

You see, the thing is - if you consistently produce stellar content - work will find you whether you want it or not.
