#Hawaii is turning #ocean #plastic into roads to fight pollution
An island #recycling program is designed to solve the islands’ unique exposure to discarded fishing gear, tourist waste and the #GreatPacificGarbagePatch, which engulfs the island chain every few years. To date, 90 metric tons of plastic trash have been removed from the #Pacific Ocean, and more than a metric ton of fishing nets alone have been paved into Hawaiian roads.

Out in the #PacificOcean, between #Hawaii & #California, is the Great #Pacific #Garbage Patch, a swirl of #PlasticTrash >2X the size of Texas. As pieces of plastic tumble against each other, they break down into particles tiny enough to be borne aloft on the wind [& inhaled].

The #GPGP, #GreatPacificGarbagePatch is appalling when one gets a view of it. I wish that items that I wanted to purchase, like berries or mushrooms, were available in more sustainable packaging. A lot of Asia previously sold everything in folded leaves and now it's endless layers of plastic instead. Progress is a problem, in many cases. -

Japan needs to stop its overuse of plastic. It's responsible for more than 30% of the hard plastic Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Also locally, the Seto Inland Sea looks more and more like a dumpster because of that.
