The Vanished Library - Luciano Canfora. It tells of warring librarians & catrocide: The book digs into the interesting details surrounding the Great Library of Alexandria and its rival, the Library of Pergamum. There are many juicy details here, such as the thwarted attempts to secure Aristotle’s Treatises. Neleus buried them in a cellar and offered only fakes or minor texts. The librarian book hunters who roamed the world and used dubious means to secure scrolls. The visiting Roman who killed a cat and was immediately murdered by an angry mob. Timons, disdainfully referred to the devoted copyists as a ‘nest of caged scribbblers’. The broader project was to obtain an original or copy of every piece of writing in the known world.
