  1. A Great Blue Heron has been visiting the pond. It stares wistfully and hungrily downward. We keep a net over the water, but a couple of days ago something big jumped into the middle of the pond, taking the net and the rock that that held one side with it so I've had to remove the net for now.

The net kept the heron from getting the fish but presumably did not stop an attempted fishing expedition. Without the net the water is clearer and access is free to the dragonflies. The fish are fine so far but very wary.

Visiting Cat once chased the heron away. It comes several times a morning I'm not sure if I'll replace the net or not. Usually the herons and egrets that stop by come once or twice then give up. This bird is persistent. It does make me a bit more inclined to carry out the natural pond idea. There is an impending too many fish problem for the pond.

  5. Chorus of Herons

This photograph captures six great blue herons in flight, moving from left to right across the frame. They soar at slightly different altitudes, unevenly layered as if stacked loosely atop one another. The birds were distant when photographed, so fine details are softened, lending the image the gentle blur of a painting. Their upper bodies carry a slate-blue hue, while their undersides are pale, accented by the play of light and shadow. Necks are drawn back in graceful curves, and long legs trail elegantly behind. There's something quietly striking about birds flying in unison—as if they’re guided by a shared intention, a single mind stretched across six wingspans.

  11. My #Restoration #Ecology class partnered with a local restoration group yesterday. We set up #longterm #monitoring plots that future classes will revisit, and also learned about #riparian restoration and some basic #PlantIdentification

Bonus, it was one of the first nice warm days of spring and a great opportunity to be outside all day. Saw numerous #GreatBlueHerons flying by and some of the first flying #Insects of the season.

#OTD The #Boston Herald published "Evidence of Havoc by #DDT" by #Duxbury #Journalist, & #Naturalist: Olga Owens Huckins.

The Huckins' land was "where #Songbirds sang, #Ducks swam, & #GreatBlueHerons nested" until #Massachusetts #Mosquito Control sprayed DDT.

    Olga wrote,
"[They] killed 7 lovely #Songbirds outright... 3 the next morning... [The birds] trusted us & [nested here] year after year."

Olga also wrote to her old friend Rachel Carson who later wrote #SilentSpring.
