In 1359, a woman set out a vision of education: intellectual delights, meritocracy, benefits to individuals and society. Centuries later, the words & imagery of the #LadyOfClare remain resonant. Behind the choir will be an extraordinary backdrop: a #RoodScreen made not of wood but of stone, twisting and curving to the sky. It's been dated to the 1350s. So, just after the #BlackDeath... Who would have supported innovation at such a time?

The Choir of Clare College Cambridge will be singing on Sat 27th June, 7:30pm at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Great Bardfield. At her house next door, the #LadyOfClare approved the college statutes. The first master, Walter de Thaxted, was her tenant at the rectory.

#ClareCollege is celebrating its 700th anniversary. However it was #OTD 667 years ago, 26th March 1359, that Elizabeth #LadyofClare drew on decades of experience & signed the statutes. She wrote of education’s value to individuals & society, & her vision of one community of fellows & students, chosen on merit. Her principles & her language continue to inspire.
