ne im ernst, es war inkl. Versand unglaublich günstig, da konnte ich bei einem getesteten Laufwerk mit Gehäuse nicht „Nein“ sagen.

I made a copy of the flux with the #greaseweazle, then converted it to ibm.1200. All 15 sectors were correctly read, though it "ignored an unexpected sector" between each track.

Vielleicht habe ich gerade wieder ein wenig #geweazled 🤗

Alle 8 Disketten waren noch in Ordnung und konnten fehlerfrei ausgelesen werden.

Das freut mich besonders, denn das Spiel, wollte ich noch einmal starten und im Herbst/Winder durchspielen!

I'm still filling in the gaps in my retro library. Today, I received this beautiful, standalone version of "Oh No! More Lemmings" for the IBM-PC. From 1991. I only payed 3.50€ for this game on eBay, since noone else wanted it. It's almost a bit sad. 🥺

Even though Greaseweazle reads this Amiga disk of "Space Quest" without any issues with 100% valid sectors, there's still an on-disk copy protection scheme hidden inside there. I just ran into a crash trying to boot from the simple 880K ADF Amiga DOS disk image. 🥺

Fortunately, using a CT-RAW disk image, made from the .raw streams, worked just fine and started the game. 😉

I got my hands on another brand-new 3.5inch disk drive. The ALPS DF354H148F from 2003 just did a perfect job, reading IBM-PC, Mac 800K and Amiga 880K diskettes. Using a Greaseweazle V4.1 and/or KryoFlux board.

I might make a real effort to clean some of the hundreds of decades old floppies I have and I have printed various tools to help do that. But I’ll have to be ready to clean drive heads a lot to figure out what works and what doesn’t.

Amazing how many floppies look outwardly ok, but fail to read and then the drive isn’t reading known good ones moments later. Bigger risk is fouling the NOS disks if I’m not careful with things. Maybe too risky.

Well, here’s hoping these are all in good shape, because they may be the last reliable, still sealed NOS DS/DD floppies I obtain. Goes nicely with the similar twenty NOS 5.25” ones I bought a while back that have been a boon to my #greaseweazle / various retro machine projects.

With GoTek, Pi1541 and similar tools, there is clearly less need, but I still want functional drives for the full experience much of the time. Tired of toxic disks fouling heads.

Hab grad mein SONY MPF 920 nochmal mit viel Mühe geputzt und dann erfolgreich mit Greaseweazle getestet.

Das Ding sieht eigentlich aus wie ein ganz normales, langweiliges 3,5 Zoll Diskettenlaufwerk, läuft aber im Unterschied zu den allermeisten Modellen mit 360rpm, statt mit den sonst üblichen 300rpm. War wohl einer der letzten Laufwerke, die 2009 nochmal was innovatives für Disketten umgesetzt hatten.

Oh, well.. I'd say the project of getting a Greaseweazle controller to complement the KryoFlux board was pretty much a success! On this first day alone, I generated over 600MB of fresh raw flux streams from physical floppy disks. I dumped all sorts of diskettes for IBM-PC and Amiga. 360K, 720K, 880K, 1.200K and 1.440K, mostly without any hiccups.

Also, "sharing is caring". I do care. 😉

Looks like Greaseweazle, controlled by the latest DiskImageTool GUI, has no issues working with 5.25" 360K floppy disks. I had to put some work into cleaning the 40-track disk drive, but as soon as that worked, everything went smoothly! 😍

Okay, das ist echt ein Vorteil vom Greaseweazle im Vergleich zum KryoFlux: Das Ding funktioniert A) schon mit USB-C und liefert B) tatsächlich selbst den Strom zum Betrieb von zumindest den 3,5 Zoll Laufwerken. Damit spart man sich den eigenen Stromanschluss für das Laufwerk und kann das Setup so viel einfacher auch auf den Schreibtisch legen. Find ich extrem nice! 😎

I cannot overstate the degree to which dealing with ancient floppies from my childhood is a form of roulette.

It’s amazing how few floppies, sampled randomly from hundreds, will fully read and even fewer write on #greaseweazle.

And the biggest hassle is having to clean the heads after one disk or another turns out to be toxic.

Much as I hate paying the blood money, I’ve resorted to sealed NOS 5.25” and now 3.5” DS/DD packs to have some I can trust.

Regarding the floppy: I did, on a whim, attach a Samsung 3.5" floppy from a PC that I used previously a bit on #greaseweazle. To my surprise, it kinda worked as-is. Not consistently and the diags don't like it, but it worked a few times enough to read the diags disk and run it.

I've read you can use PC floppy drives on Amigas, but I think it is persnickety about the model or I might need to make a physical mod of some sort...? Research.

But I hope I can fix mine.

Spent quite a few hours going over things since getting it to boot. The internal floppy is a rattling, grinding non-working mess and I'll have to strip it down to see if I can fix it. I have an external floppy from my CDTV that works nicely and I was able to read the AmigaTestKit disk I made with #greaseweazle to run most of the diags.

The diags I can easily check are all good save one: I'm missing right channel audio entirely. More on that in followup posts...

Loved discovering (by happenstance) on the #greaseweazle that, for my C64 floppies, I can do a "--tracks hswap --reverse" and write things to the back of an un-punched, DS 5.25" floppy. For anything that expects write protected media (plenty of stuff), this is super useful for easily doubling what I have on a somewhat limited supply of reliable disks.

I gather it might burn me for disks that are near capacity due to a head offset? But not run into that yet and still reading up on it.

The last item from tonight’s spelunking is a sealed pack of 3.5” colorful translucent floppy disks. I recall finding this at work (back when I ran tech at a small college) eons after floppies were gone and hanging on to it for posterity.

Now I might need it with #greaseweazle around. That said, I plan to keep it sealed for emergency use only right now. Still fun to have a NOS pack like this and with a $3.99 price tag on the bottom. :)

@gloriouscow Wish I had a drive to read these 8” floppies on the #greaseweazle. I got these from someone years ago and would enjoy seeing what’s on them and comparing to the claims of the labeling. I see “System 3000” on one or more of them.

@gloriouscow I'm curious about the seek past 40 routine and what is detected / reported.I noticed my #greaseweazle can tell my 5.25" drive (if given the wrong parameters) to write tracks beyond its reach and the head will just happily click at the physical limit until I interrupt it.

@gloriouscow I give up for now. It's been an interesting challenge, but I'm clearly not seeing something that's probably vastly simpler than I'm making it at this point.

I tried moving it all to PA0 for comparison and no different. I might pose some questions in the firmware repo, but most questions I've seen there of late have gone unanswered for some time.

I hate not solving a problem, but I'm at a dead end for now.

@gloriouscow I noticed that the unused pins had a pullup applied (normally PA0 and PA8 for GPIO A pins). I removed (I think) PA8 from that by altering the mask. So I feel like I've touched everything that would define a later move from PA15 to PA8 for RD_DATA. But alas....

Just sharing in case it's of interest or you have casual thoughts... not making this your problem to solve or anything. :)

@gloriouscow It's a mystery. I checked RD_DATA at pin 30 on the header and at the end of my bodge wire where it enters pin 29 of the MCU (PA8) and it's a match.

So I'm either overlooking something in the source changes or something is more mangled on the board/MCU than I realized.

Tried changing the DMA controller being used via the source, etc. Not breaking anything, but not fixing anything either. :)

I replaced the board, but just curious to fix this one.

@gloriouscow Sorted the firmware flashing - on a 4.1 board it requires ArterySPI on Windows and not the ST-LINKv2. Also got the build process working.

So I cut the trace to 38 post-R9 (R9 checks good, BTW) and jumped pin 30 to PA8. Altered the source accordingly and flashed. .

Logic analyzer sees the read activity now that we didn't see the other night. In fact, I see all signals I'd expect.

But still the same problem with the tools: zero flux on reads. :(

After some tangentially related mishaps, I finally have my #greaseweazle drive case design finished and assembled. I know there are many others, but this is my own minimalist box holding 5.25”, 3.5” and the board itself in a fairly compact case. USB and power plug into the back.

Prints in two pieces with no supports needed.

@gloriouscow Everything on the #greaseweazle works but reads. :) RPM, stepper movements, etc... but zero flux from reads on any drive using any cable after that.

I hope it didn't do damage to my 5.25" drive that was connected on the same ribbon cable at the time (I think), but I'll find out when I get a replacement board, I guess.

+12v on the +5v for the 3.5" definitely ended that 20+ year old piece of otherwise perfectly working gear. :(

Well, this has been one of those annoying days where you set out to make something cool and end up breaking stuff that worked perfectly well.

Still analyzing it, but I think I had a momentary flipped molex connector that made pin contact despite not fully fitting together. Lost a 3.5" floppy drive with a nice black faceplate and, worse, perhaps my #greaseweazle board.

Still trying to sort if that's what happened to the board, but I don't yet have another cause. So irked.

After a bunch of little sectional test prints to dial in a few alignments, my full print of a #greaseweazle drive chassis I designed yesterday starts its 9.5hr run.

Holds a 3.5" and a 5.25" DSDD in a relatively compact case along with the board, so just USB-C and power on the back. The power I opted to keep outboard on a 4 pin molex to keep the chassis smaller and so I can double duty that adapter on the workbench with other drives.

Two pieces. No supports.

Anyone have or know where I can snag a working build of #FluxEngine for an ARM64 Mac and latest Tahoe? Current build just launches to a blank window after flashing its splash screen. I see a romfs error referencing fonts in the console output when launched via the terminal.

Not sure the task I have for it merits a lot of effort trying to resolve the issue if there is a good older build or known fix. Seeing others reporting the same issue on GitHub as well.
