  1. This evening I learned the following bizarre things:
0/ Colliding massive objects create gravity waves (this I already knew).
1/ When spinning black holes collide, they experience an acceleration at right angles to the sum of the spins.
2/ The bigger the black holes, the greater the acceleration and resulting speed.
3/ When this happens with galactic core supermassive black holes, this can exceed the escape velocity of the galaxies.
4/ When one of these high-speed supermassive black holes encounters a dust or gas cloud, it creates a contrail of stars! And we can see these star-contrails - straight lines of stars, scattered across the cosmos!

    Thank-you Professor David Blair!

  2. When neutron stars merge, things get messy

What happens when the densest objects in the universe collide? A neutron star merger is a cosmic forge that creates heavy elements like gold and platinum, but it also unleashes "messy" gravitational waves and gamma-ray bursts that can sterilize nearby solar systems. We look at the violent physics of a kilonova.

  7. Revealing Gravity Waves

Severe weather — like thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes — can push air upward into a higher layer of the atmosphere and trigger gravity waves. Aboard the International Space Station (ISS), the Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE) instrument captures these waves by looking for variations in the brightness of Earth’s airglow (above). Recently, when Hurricane Helene hit the southeastern United States, AWE caught a series of gravity waves some 55 miles up, pushed by the storm (below). It’s incredible to see these long-ranging ripples spreading far beyond the heart of the storm. (Video credits: NASA Goddard and Utah State University)

“On Sept. 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene slammed into the Gulf Coast of Florida, inducing storm surges and widespread impacts on communities in its path. At the same time, NASA’s Atmospheric Waves Experiment, or AWE, recorded enormous swells in the atmosphere that the hurricane produced roughly 55 miles above the ground. Such information helps us better understand how terrestrial weather can affect space weather, part of the research NASA does to understand how our space environment can disrupt satellites, communication signals, and other technology…”

#MPI_Scientist Yanmichel Morfa @[email protected] et al. studied the horizontal and vertical kinetic energy spectra and their relationships in global #StormResolving simulations from the DYAMOND experiments. His findings highlight the role of #GravityWaves in defining the magnitude of mesoscale vertical motions in the #atmosphere.

Yes. It has concerned me since the advent of the whole B-Mode #Polarisation issue with respect to ancient #GravityWaves/#photon-#baryon oscillations that a whole lot more work is needed to separate out signal from noise in the #CMB. This certainly ruined #AlanGuth's day.

  16. #PhysicsFactlet
The velocity of propagation of a sea wave depends on the depth of the water: the shallower the water the slower the wave. So if the depth reduces the wave will "accumulate" (like in a traffic jam).
If the liquid is incompressible, this can create a Tsunami.

Disclaimer: Just solving the wave equation with the appropriate dispersion relation here, to show the "traffic jam" effect. NOT a proper fluid dynamics simulation.

  20. # Introduction

Hi all, I am moving from the bird site and hope that I found my fediverse home on this server. I'm a #physics|ist working on improving #Climate models with #ai in the #usmile erc project (usmile-erc.eu), especially interested in #gravitywaves. Also interested in #plasma physics, #quantumcomputing, #space, #opensciene, and much more. Views are my own. Looking forward to meeting great people here!
