"What makes the Rudong tower a genuine first is the part where no water is involved. It’s the first commercial, grid-scale gravity storage system that pulls off the trick with solid blocks instead of a reservoir, according to Energy Vault."

@pfriedma Many aspects involved I believe, e.g. system of scale for dielectric material based devices might not work well, for electromechanical systems (pumps=>gravity) not every country or state is Norway/Switzerland (geography, grid quality, economy). Large ”holes-in-the-ground” with fluids and pumps might be coming online to a certain extent. No way around investing loads into grids IMO (high DC voltage, long distance, better resilience …) #gravityBatteries

The concept is simple: excess renewable energy powers winches that lift heavy weights up the mine shaft.
When energy is needed, these weights descend and generate power.

Why not convert all #elevators to operate with #gravitybatteries? #Cities could power their #grids with the savings.
They’re also a great storage companion to rooftop solar.

Hmm... I wonder how far a container ship could go on a single 'charge' if it used its entire cargo as a giant gravity battery?

Brilliant! My only concern would be flooding:
