High alert around the pond. Two #robins are taking on a big #GrassSnake.
Minutes later, when the snake has disappeared among the stones and flowers around the workshop, a little fluff ball comes out of the yew hedge nearby.
The snake shouldn't have been too hungy though as it had a big frog minutes before...

Grass snake part III
(I think, lost count) -
Went to the woods between rain showers. Together with oldest two kids. Daughter needs some exercise because of her health and oldest was bored and wanted to play Pokémon. Dad wanted to show them the grass snakes…. We were lucky to see a young one briefly

After the rain the sun started to shine. Time to observe the grass snake again. It turned out it’s a family 2 adult snakes and at least 2 juveniles.

We love the grass snakes in/around our pond, but listening to a #frog being predated by a #GrassSnake is always a gruesome experience.
However, without #predation there are no #snakes. Unusual is the late time of the day (about 6 pm) and the overcast sky. Usually the snakes hunt in full sun. -
Stressed grass snakes smell of garlic, meaning you need one less ingredient when cooking them.

I moved to England 30yrs ago. Yesterday, I saw my first wild snake! Only a Grass Snake, but what a beautiful creature.
It was a juvenile, no longer than 25cms and not even as thick as my little finger.
I found it hiding under a tarp in my garden. Unfortunately, I suspect it has been displaced by nearby greenfield development. However, it is welcome in my little bit of green space.
