  1. About a year ago (May '25), I was at the top of Helm Craig, looking down on Grasmere. We were staying at the Lancrigg Hotel for a few nights.

I can't express how much I want to return there. I clearly underestimated how many days we should have stayed there. Can one be homesick for a place you don't live in?

I'm not sure if it's a rational feeling, but I could certainly take a few months to hike as many fells as I could.

  2. It was raining so our Plan B was a scenic drive though the English #LakeDistrict - traffic wasn’t bad but it was the longest I’ve even seen the queue at the old #Gingerbread Shop in #Grasmere, about half an hour standing in the rain (most of that in the graveyard) with a fairly international mix of happy looking tourists.

  3. My happy place. Thinking of the Lancrigg Hotel, just outside of Grasmere. (2025) Late afternoon sun.

  4. A photo taken on the way up to Helm Craig. The weather was amazing. Random hills were spotlighted by the sun. Eventually it was my turn. Looking towards Grasmere Lake.

  5. During my recovery from Covid in 2020, I had this series of Alfred Wainwright hiking books of the Lakeland Fells to distract me. I started planning out different options for an ideal hike.

Five years later, I was delighted to complete the loop, by making it to the top of Helm Craig. It's a beginner hike for the locals, but not as easy for me. But I made it.

  6. A View from Alcock Tarn: Grasmere and Helm Crag

Another view from our recent trip to the Lakes. This surprisingly hibernal scene of the Grasmere valley, with Helm Crag taking centre stage, was captured from Alcock Tarn below Heron Pike. The green pasture fields in the valley provide a pleasant contrast to the lifeless, bracken-covered, rock-strewn hillsides.

Helm Crag is often called “The Lion and the Lam ...

  7. Back in December of 2020, I caught Covid-19 (Delta). It was a scary time, with so many people hospitalized.

I isolated myself in our bedroom for over a week, with the Lakeland Fells pictorial hiking book series (Alfred Wainwright). I combed through all seven books, bookmarking fun hikes.

Fast forward 4+ years, and next year, we will be there. I'll bring Book Three. Excited to hike Helm Crag near Grasmere.

    Just feels so poetic.

  8. Still Walking Forward (Just...)

  10. So today we hiked up from #Grasmere village and it didn’t disappoint. Alcock Tarn and on up to Heron Pike (600m/2000 ft). Stunning views, deep green valleys, many lakes and views right out to the coast - camera just doesn’t do justice to it. Back down via Brackenfell #hiking #GetOutside
