#Israel / Israeli avocado farmers see record profits from sales in Europe, expanding farming into Africa
Israeli media is reporting that the shortage created in Europe, partly due to drought in #Spain and #Portugal, secured an excellent year for Israeli growers with the marketing of 240,000 tons abroad, at prices 20% higher compared to last year.
Industry sources said that the shortage created in Europe overcame any reservations, “if any,” about purchasing from Israeli produce. The war on Gaza also affected some of the growers in Israel, especially in the north and south, who struggled to reach and harvest the fruit. But according to industry sources, those who managed to harvest - enjoyed an excellent year.
According to Giora Marom, the person in charge of the avocado sector at #Granot, "The reasons for the good season are rooted in the situation abroad. In the domestic market, there were fruit surpluses “due to the suspension of supply to #Gaza and the territories.” A lot of fruit remained in the domestic market and avocado was sold to supermarket chains at 4-5 NIS per kg.
