"Heavy equipment rolled into the Grand River Wednesday as crews installed a temporary barrier downstream of Gillett Bridge to catch sediment and debris, the first step in a long-planned effort to remove four aging low-head dams.
"The floating yellow barrier, known as a turbidity curtain, is designed to contain clouds of sediment stirred up during construction and prevent it from drifting downstream, said Mike Staal, river restoration project manager for the City of Grand Rapids.
" 'If thereβs turbidity in the water, it impacts the aquatic habitat,' he said. 'So what we want to do is just minimize any of the impact, keep the sediment where it is.'
"The turbidity curtain is just the beginning of a carefully choreographed, two-year construction effort to remove four, century-old low-head dams along a half-mile stretch of the Grand River between Fulton Street and I-196. The result, officials say, will be a more natural waterwayβsafer for recreation, better for fish passage and more closely resembling the rapids that gave Grand Rapids its name."

Situated over the #GrandRiver Ontario, in West Montrose, is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Canada. Locals driving their horse and buggy rigs began to call the structure the "kissing bridge" : a kiss (in privacy inside the bridge) was required as a toll to cross it.

After 3 days of blustery winter weather it was nice to get a #hike in at #PioneerTower along the #GrandRiver in #Kitchener, #Ontario.
We hiked 8.8KM along the river & spotted some #birds that we thought would have migrated south by now:

Letβs go Biking With Bob Jonkman, The Green Party Candidate for Brantford-Brant!
Weβll take a ride around a section of the Grand River, starting at George Campbell Park (D), west to the SCJT trail (B), north along the river to Colborne Street (C), then back to George Campbell Park (D) along the TH&B trail south of the river.
I estimate it at about 15km, done in a leisurely 90 minutes, finished by 6:00pm. Temperature is expected to be 15C, so a light jacket may be called for.
Bring a water bottle, bike helmet, and your bike (of course). Weβll meet in the parking lot just south of George Cambell Park at 4:00pm.
