Scientist pleaded guilty to smuggling #Fusarium #graminearum into #US. But what is it?
It causes a disease in #barley and #wheat called Fusarium head blight, or scab. It can also damage #rice and rot #corn ears and stalks. In severe cases, scab could cut a farm’s yield by 45%!
Its responsible for some of greatest annual crop losses in US. In 2024 extension & research plant pathologists suggested scab reduced US wheat crop by approximately 31 million bushels or roughly 2%.
