Give me a fucking break. The families who send their kids to US schools are the most #capitalist of all the Chinese. The ones idolizing the Chinese style of government start with #DonaldTrump.

Not only is there a general problem in the way graduates' student debt is handled (hardly ameliorated yesterdays bounce interest rate cap at 6%), there is also a clear gendered dimension, perhaps most obviously demonstrated in the continued accrual of debt during maternity leave... once again raising the cost of motherhood.

Its a problem entirely the result of a (wilful) political misunderstanding of the social purpose of university education.

But the Q. is whether the cap is low enough to deal with graduates' immediate concerns: given that inflation might come in at around 4% for March, the IFS thinks higher earning graduate would gain around £500 over their lifetime while at the moment (until inflation rises over 6%) lower earning graduate gain nothing!

The Lib Dems have said they would forgive 20% of student debt for public sector workers; of course, one might quibble about the relatively low % but this is a move in the right directions but for two small issues:

Are we likely to see the LibDems in Govt.? Well perhaps in a coalition?

Can we trust then to deliver such a discount? Here we might look back to the last time they were in a coalition... oh hold on, didn't they betray those (now) graduates before?

Relatively quietly in the Autumn Budget another bit of fiscal drag increased income tax, this time on university graduates:

The repayment threshold for student loans will be frozen at £28,470 from April 2027 for three years.

Essentially graduates will start repaying sooner & pay a larger share of income than if thresholds had risen with inflation.

(at least the repayment is capped at 30 years, soon it moves to 40 for future graduates!)

It argues for liquidating #AI #art, not out of a dismissal of #artificialintelligence as techno-fascist, nihilist or parrot-like, but an insistence that art has always been created by assemblages of #humans and nonhumans.

The talk references Frieder Nake’s assertion that art should not be divided into commodifiable styles based on the #tools used, but should function as a radical force capable of disrupting the hierarchies of the art world.

Picking up on this challenge, ‘Liquidate AI Art’ shows how UK arts funding today overwhelmingly benefits upper- and middle-class, privately educated #Oxbridge #graduates.
What’s needed is a #redistribution of resources to support radically different artistic practices.

More evidence (this time from the Institute of Student Employers) that its not artificial intelligence that is causing a continued reduction in graduate opportunities (which have dropped for the second year running) but rather employers' assessment of the general economic outlook.

They seem to be hanging on to existing staff & dialling back recruitment as the cheaper option in times of uncertainty.

Mind you, its unlikely that AI is helping graduate recruitment!
