  3. Grace Bumbry (January 4, 1937 – May 7, 2023) was one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her generation, like Shirley Verrett she later transitioned to doing soprano roles, as well. Due to her deeply dramatic voice she’s considered one of the greatest Black female interpreters of Wagner and enjoyed a long career in Europe.
