From National Instruments on my request to distribute a firmware file.
"GPIB‑USB‑B has been out of mainstream support for almost five years, and NI no longer updates or certifies firmware distribution for this product. Additionally, GPIB‑USB‑HS+ is not supported on Linux Desktop, so NI cannot provide enablement, licensing guidance, or approval for firmware redistribution in this scenario."
To paraphrase ... we don't support it and won't let anyone else do it..

With a working GPIB connection (thanks @vk2bea !), I'm able to read out the full error log from my Tektronix TDS754D.
ERROR: diagnostic test failure, digDataFormatDiag, ERROR!!BYTE mode, in demux 200 ,i= 7 memBaseAdr 0x7380010= data = 5600, expectedData[i] = 5500"
ibterm>errlog:next?I'm suspecting (and hoping) this is a bad ram chip). I have a tenuous understanding of the whole system, but I'm only seeing capture errors on some sweep rates, and dependent on which / how many channels are active.
It's an utterly bad-ass instrument, and I'd love to get it back to 100% -
Finally got this #GPIB adapter working in #linux.
There’s a lot of forgeries of this and the NI adapter. I got this one on eBay from a test equipment surplus place, which gave me a little bit more confidence.
I think this is genuine, just based on the knurling on the thumb screws. I think the counterfeit ones are shinier, with shallower knurling. At some point I’ll hook it up to windows and see what the official driver thinks about it. -
This super neat #gpib to usb adapter is doing the numbers. And for good reason, feels nice finally having an offering that doesn't rely on usb to serial!

Produkt: National Instrumens GPIB-USB-HS

I still find the #HP9816 useful today, to control #GPIB instruments. I wrote two programs, one to control the Bruel&Kjaer 2034 audio spectrum analyzer to do third-of-octave analysis and another one to do various measurements with a #HP4277A LCZ meter. If I need to further process data, I download them on a modern computer using a RS232 cable I built. I transferred and published the HPBASIC source of the third of octave software on Github: https://github.com/DarwinNE/BK2034_GPIB/tree/master/HPBASIC

Another thing I found in the #birdsite archives is how I cleaned and repaired a magnificent #HP9816 (aka HP9000/216) workstation. It's a very nice machine, based on the 68k processor, that can run HPBASIC and can be connected to external disk drives and peripherals via #GPIB. I had to clean it, but it came out quite well. #retrocomputing #electronics #HPBASIC #GPIB

Some carnage it was indeed! Ended up replacing all ICs except the main TMS9914. A wonder it survived. The other chips were mostly a dead short to ground. No surprise the supply rail was a little scorched. I really wonder what happened here and what became of the poor instrument is was originally installed in…
Now at least it got a new life and my 8590A spectrum analyzer is happily communicating with the outside world!
