Gouldian finches (Erythrura gouldiae) survive in huge numbers in cages worldwide, but the wild population in Australia’s north is struggling.

Records suggest immense flocks of Gouldian finch, possibly with thousands of individual birds, were common across savannah grasslands in the late 1800s, before pastoralism and the collecting of birds for pets began having an impact. Little than a century later, this exquisite species is en route to disappearing forever from the wild.
