  1. John Trapp, an Anglican Bible commentator, read Proverbs 22:9 as a call to generous, willing giving. The truly bountiful, he said, give not just goods but themselves to the hungry. Isaiah 58 confirms that God notices such mercy. This isn’t prosperity hype; it’s moral formation. Trapp’s question still presses: what would make generosity cheerful rather than forced?

  3. Thomas Gouge, English Puritan, on James 2:17. He requests the rich, who won’t make a conscience of the duty of sharing their goods, to stop talking of religion. They have none.

I hear lots of evangelical pastors talk of those with no religion, but it often has to do with a lack of boldness for politics, rarely anything to do with your neighbor’s need.

How can you be rich in good works today, where enemy would say you follow J217?
