  1. The "wait, is Satan good or bad?" reaction makes it difficult to have any Satanist claimings of historical figures, but James Baldwin did actually write that in a semi-autobiographical novel.

Being born Black and queer in the United States was already two strikes against him, but Baldwin was also smart as hell—with the kind of encompassing mind & articulation to match that meant, listening to him or reading him, you could be aware how much smarter he was than you without ever being lost in what he was saying.

Most people will learn about Baldwin on their own b/c it's hard to teach him in school. With Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King Jr., teachers can focus on specific historical acts that are no longer relevant, such as segregation and bus boycotts, or on a few choice lines and misrepresentations. MLK Jr., as he lived, was described in FBI reports as "the most dangerous Negro of the future in this Nation"; but he can be cut down to a cartoon

With Baldwin, there is no anodyne version of him b/c his criticisms of the United States, of American Christianity & white supremacy, of white identity itself, even policing & "riots" are just as cogent & relevant now.

James Baldwin, long after death, remains an exceptionally "dangerous Negro" who is difficult to touch even to slander. His work is exactly the sort of fruit that has to be hidden away and not consumed.

We've already talked elsewhere about Anton LaVey's myopic view of rebellion and transgression. But in general, when LaVey writes about what "The Satanist" is or does, principles he lays out do not compare well to many examples he gives or the choices he made in his own life.

Whatever usefulness Satanism has now is directly related to how we define rebellion & which ghosts of the past we allow to inspire us today.

  2. ❤️ Couples ❤️

"the one real love story of my life"

James Baldwin was 25 in 1949 when he met 17 year old Swiss painter Lucien Happersberger in a little bar called La Reine Blanche in Paris. After carousing several more bars the pair spent the night in Baldwin's bed. Happersberger was 'curious' seeing a Black American in Paris, + was naïve on the prejudices white Americans + French held. "I came from little Switzerland. The color of the skin did not play any role.". Later Baldwin would say they would "meet late in the day at a cafe + pool what money we'd managed to raise + then we'd eat. We shared everything"

It was at Happersberger family chalet that Baldwin would write his first novel 'Go Tell It on the Mountain'. Happersberger, in charge of the domestic life while Baldwin worked, remembers the moment his novel was finished when he heard Jimmy punching out loudly the final six letters "THE END."

Eventually Lucien would marry + the couple's relationship turned to lifelong friendship. Happersberger was at Baldwin's side at his deathbed in 1987

  3. I loved #GoTellItOnTheMountain, and if I’m honest I missed hearing more about his experience as a Black, queer man in America. (I’ll get back to those). But this is an astonishing book, a synthesis of story, structure, themes and superb writing that make it an absolute masterpiece. What a relief that he didn’t heed his publisher’s advice and burn it. All the stars.

  4. Back 2016, my sister visited us in Colorado. My wife recorded us singing #GoTellItOnTheMountain a capella on her cell phone in Rocky Mountain National Park. (online here: youtu.be/JrY8LRr6z4w ) We learned this #harmony as children from a cassette version of Simon & Garfunkel's "Wednesday Morning 3am" album. That tape was one of two that we were allowed to play any time without asking. (The other was Jim Croce's Greatest Hits.) Merry Christmas folks! #Christmas #acapella #MerryXmas #Singing
