John Calvin, Calvinist pastor, compares James 5 to rules on animal welfare from Proverbs. He says it would be a greater act of barbarity to feel no pity for a human that has served you. Calvin makes it clear that he sees the abuse of James 5:4 as being extant in his day and worthy of being admonished.
Today, would we be warned that those who admonish the rich should receive no pity?

Henry Moncreiff-Wellwood, Church of Scotland moderator, considers Christian history. Early church is full of accounts of alms-giving as an essential part of the character of true believers, enforced as an essential duty.
Today, instead of viewing alms as essential character of Christians, do we besmirch the character of refugees or migrants, as we campaign against them getting near our neighborhood?
How can you give alms today?
