  5. Traditional lyrics - Fix Me Jesus.
    Oh, fix me; Oh, fix me;
    Oh, fix me. Fix me, Jesus, fix me.
    1 Fix me for my long, white robe;
    Fix me, Jesus, fix me.
    Fix me for my starry crown;
    Fix me, Jesus, fix me. [Refrain]
    2 Fix me for my journey home;
    Fix me, Jesus, fix me.
    Fix me for my dying bed;
    Fix me, Jesus, fix me. [Refrain]

  6. This week's #TuneTuesday theme is #SignOfTheCross. I'm going with one of Sam Cooke's finest gospel recordings:

  8. For this week's #SaturdayOnStage I've chosen one of my favorite video clips, which is from the 1972 concert movie "Wattstax".

    The Emotions: Peace Be Still (1972)
    youtube.com/watch?v=XFWZcMxFmd0

    At the time, the Emotions were making excellent secular recordings for Stax's Volt subsidiary, but it's a revelation to see how incredibly good they were when they were singing gospel music at a small Los Angeles church.

  9. @reverend I'm currently working on an article on the career of Theola Kilgore. By coincidence, I just wrote a couple of paragraphs on King Louis H. Narcisse this morning (she made her first record with him).

    Trying to confirm some of the facts, I found out that the Ebony magazine did a really good article on him back in 1963:

    Louie Robinson: The Kindom of King Narcisse. California Breeds Another Bizarre But Colorful Sect. (Ebony, July 1963)
    books.google.com/books?id=_Gx3

    And of course, there's also a more comprehensive article on his career by Opal Louis Nations, originally published in Blues & Rhythm in 2000, and later used as the liner notes for a CD collection of his recordings, "It's Nice To Be Nice" (Gospel Treasures Records OLN 2001):

  10. For this week's #SaturdayOnStage I've chosen a performance by the Gospelaires, one of the top gospel groups of the 1960s.

    I have more than a dozen of their singles on Don Robey's Peacock label and several albums as well, but they were also an exciting live act, with a great deal of showmanship, as you can see in this video, filmed on a rare visit to Germany in 1966:

  16. I had rehearsed the words for days, the ones I knew would probably change everything. Mama, I think I might be…
    But then, before I could force the words out, the world shattered around me.
