I’m sat on Whinny Hill enjoying the solitude, surrounded by sweet smelling gorse flowers, while everyone else flocks to the slightly higher summit of Arthur’s Seat.

I’m reminded of coming up here 5 years ago at the start of lockdown, trying to scramble up to St. Anthony’s Chapel without touching the rocks, as we didn’t know then if the virus was spread by contact. Didn’t have the rumble of traffic or the babble of tourists then.

I've just published a new page on my website documenting the last 3 months on an art residency exploring fire through the plant aiteann (gorse) and its relationship to sitka spruce: https://shanefinan.org/VAP/15_aiteann.html

This was part of the international research project investigating wildfires called FIRECULT. For the project, I created charcoal and made new drawings, made work with fire, and created two new video artworks.

Until you join a #path or #bridleway, you have to negotiate #gorse which, if you’re not careful, could easily mean a twisted ankle. However, the wild #flowers are very colourful. You can also see part of #FernworthyForest in the background, which is where we were headed.

1. The first winter aconites and snowdrops I've seen this year

2. Crocuses growing wild beside a path

3. Gorse in flower
