¿Sabían que en la antigua Grecia las personas colocaban la terrorífica cara de la Medusa en las puertas de sus casas, escudos y vasijas como protección mágica para espantar a los malos espíritus y las malas vibras?

Este antiguo amuleto de protección se conoce de forma oficial con el nombre de gorgoneion, y consiste en la representación gráfica de la cabeza de una Gorgona, la criatura mitológica con cabellos de serpiente que podía convertir en piedra a cualquiera que la mirara a los ojos. En lugar de ver este rostro como un símbolo del mal, los griegos del siglo VIII antes de Cristo descubrieron que su fealdad extrema y su mirada fija tenían la propiedad de asustar y alejar las energías negativas, un concepto que en el estudio de las culturas antiguas se conoce formalmente como arte apotropaico o magia protectora.

La presencia de este amuleto era masiva en el día a día del mundo clásico, pues se tallaba en las piedras de la entrada de los hogares para cuidar a la familia, se pintaba en el fondo de las copas de vino para proteger las bebidas contra los venenos y se grababa en los hornos de pan para evitar que la comida se echara a perder. Incluso la gran diosa Atenea llevaba el gorgoneion justo en el centro de su armadura y en su escudo dorado, llamado la Égida, demostrando que hasta las máximas divinidades confiaban en este diseño para romper cualquier maldición o envidia. Con el paso del tiempo, el símbolo fue cambiando su estilo visual, pasando de ser una máscara con la lengua de fuera y colmillos de jabalí a una cara mucho más humana y estilizada que hoy en día podemos ver replicada en marcas de moda y decoraciones modernas por todo el mundo.

Lejos de ser solo la espeluznante imagen de la cabeza de Medusa de la #MitologíaGriega con sus serpientes por cabellos, el Gorgoneion era en realidad un poderoso amuleto. Su función no era solo la de asustar, sino la de "alejar" o "pertificar" el mal. Los antiguos creían que esta efigie, capaz de convertir a los enemigos en piedra, protegía a quien la portaba del infortunio, los malos espíritus y cualquier adversidad. 

Era un símbolo de protección tan venerado que incluso las deidades olímpicas como el mismo Zeus y Atenea lo llevaban consigo, a menudo representado en el centro de sus escudos o corazas (como en la égida). Así que, cada vez que veas ese rostro icónico, recuerda que es uno de los talismanes de defensa más antiguos y extendidos de la historia humana.
