  11. “Polio swept through #Winnipeg in the early ’50s. Neil had it and I did too. So did my brothers. We all had it at the same time. But Neil was always very focused. It didn’t matter what obstacle was there, he overcame it. I felt the same.

Neil and I were among a bunch of teenage guys who were learning how to play guitar and starting #bands in Winnipeg. Every Sunday, there was a #RadioShow called Hello Britain, where they’d play all the top hits from #England. It might be #ShaneFenton And The Fentones or Cliff Richard And #TheShadows. Then it was just The Shadows or #TheOutlaws. We copied all this stuff and played it on stage.

We’d get the bus to the community centre and Neil would be there with #TheSquires. We’d stay there all night and watch them. I was pretty amazed when he started playing the folk clubs on his own. He radically changes his mind and his direction, to the shock of everyone. But then, he’s done this all his life. I used to go the #Riverboat [Coffee House] in #Toronto all the time. I saw #GordonLightfoot, #JoniMitchell and Ramblin’ #JackElliott. It was quite fantastic. I saw Neil many times there, just acoustic. I’d think, ‘Yeah, he can do it. He can be a folk singer.’

When I left in ’65 to tour the States with #TheGuessWho I sent a note back to Neil, saying, “You gotta get out of town. This is where you really get appreciated.” So he left and went to #ThunderBay, then #FortWilliam, and met #StephenStills. Then – boom – he started #BuffaloSpringfield.”

Daily writing prompt What’s a movie or book that inspired you to travel? View all responses

None really. I’m not much of a traveler so no book or movie has inspired me to travel. In fact, the first movie I thought of this morning inspired me not to travel and that’s The Wizard of Oz. When Dorothy wakes up in her bed and tells us if she ever goes looking for her heart’s desire again she won’t look any further than her own back yard because if it’s not there, it was never lost to begin with, it made sense to me. Stay home, stay safe. Kind of a sheltered existence, but it works. About the best a book has ever done for me is inspire me to want to travel. Travels With Charley, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. On the Road. I suppose The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the Hobbit books might have to be somewhere on that list too. Maybe, in a way, metaphorically?, the Book of Exodus? If I think about it more I’m guessing more titles will come to mind so I’ll stop thinking about it now.

  26. I grew up with a mother who had all Gordon Lightfoot's records and so I've heard everything he recorded many times.

A fun game now is to look up song titles and even if I'm convinced I've never heard that one before, it usually takes just a few moments before neurons start pinging with familiarity, and I can sing along (badly) by the chorus.
