On the irruption of #Threads of #Meta in the #Fediverse and #Fediblock I have my two cents too.I too had my own #XMPP server back in the day and federated with #Google and their #GoogleTalk and saw first hand when they unilaterally broke the federation and all my friends stayed there. I ended up so burnt out that I didn't host or manage a server again until this year with #Mastodon.

A quasi 20 anni da #googletalk, che aveva standard aperti con #XMPP, ecco l'infinita serie di fallimenti del reparto messagistica di Google, secondi solo ai tonfi dei progetti social (Gooogle+ in primis):

@downey #Google already did with #XMPP: first supporting it in #GoogleTalk, then "defederating" other servers then dropping XMPP. A classic example of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish! #AvoidGoogle @janriemer @dma

I wish I had #journaled, over the years. It's nice to look back on what the minutiae of your life were like at some random point in the past. The closest I get to that is stumbling upon a random Google chat when I am searching for an email. I guess the #GoogleTalk era was the closest I have to a journal.

@jaczad #Thunderbird wspiera obsługę czatów jedynie w standardowych otwartych protokołach takich jak #XMPP #IRC. #GoogleChat nie jest oparty na żadnym z tych protokołów (od zamknięcia #GoogleTalk w 2013 r.) Tak więc w tym kliencie go nie podepniesz. Możesz co najwyżej stworzyć własną integrację usług Google na podstawie udostępnionej przez #Google dokumentacji https://developers.google.com/chat

@librelounge I think the reason XMPP never took off - putting aside gOgle's embrace, extend, extinguish strategy with #GoogleTalk - is that most people can't cope with choosing a server. I've tried to get people to use #Mumble for voice meeings and that's the bit that seems to really throw them. Which might also explain why, among the #FreeCode chat apps, centralized ones like #Signal and #Wire have more traction than decentralized ones like #Conversation (XMPP) and #Riot (Matrix).
