Spotted in my Calishat Snaps: Sweetfont. From the page description: “Sweetfont helps you find the perfect Google Font by exploring axes like playfulness, elegance, and warmth on interactive XY pads.”

Started the first non-work day of the year with some yak-shaving on my website: learnt how to use local web fonts, picked one (Literata), changed some colors and removed the Google Programmable Search Engine and Google Analytics.
Webpages are now pure HTML/CSS (zero JS) and literally a few hundred bytes in size total.

A while ago on the #OrangeSite I read a comment by someone claiming that #GDPR #fines for using #GoogleFonts were unconscionable because browsers are #UserAgents and companies shouldn't be fined for what they do.
This is of course incredulous victim blaming, but it does bump up against an uncomfortable fact: the term "user agent" as applied to browsers is at best useful fiction.
A real user agent would not have a mechanism to load arbitrary untrusted code into itself or contact third parties.

‘Font Downloader’ is a GTK App for Downloading Google Fonts on Linux
Looking for an easy way to search and download fonts from Google Fonts on Ubuntu? Check out Font Downloader, a perfectly formed GTK front-end for the Google Fonts repository. This app makes it easy to browse, search, and filter (e.g., monospace, handwritten, etc) over 1,075 free and open source fonts available on Google Fonts. When you touch upon some typography you’re keen to use, Font Downloader makes it easy to test the font within the app (perfect for seeing it has the character coverage you need) but download (to a folder of your choice) or install it in ‘one-click’. “One :sys_more_orange:

#StopGAFAM -
Hello /e/,
I was in the middle of recommending /e/ (among other options), but, when checking out your website, I noticed something quite incoherent.
By visiting your website (in normal mode) it appears that users are contacting Google via Google APIs (among other third party connections). This raises a few questions. Are there any plans to clean up the website? Are there any connections to Google services embedded in /e/'s basic operations?
Cheers,

I'm all for calling out Google AMP, but, #Google #AMP is only possible because everyone is so dependent on Google, including #TheRegister. Google knows this because their #googlefonts are everywhere and their analytics are close behind and The Register is not exception, they also #DoubleClick.
The Register needs to start reading itself.
