  1. My condolences to everyone with #googlefiber. Astound *sucks*. A company that actually competes with Google for the "worst customer support" title. Now they are one.

  5. Well lookie what appeared over my apartment door: a #GoogleFiber drop. After 2 years in the neighborhood, they finally light up my apartment complex. It's tempting. #SpectrumCable sucks so bad.

Google Fiber did the same thing, but usually selectively, as if it were a lottery. Verizon Fios made big general promises to everyone. Both were a bad example of how to be a Fiber Optic company.

  9. Constantly getting pitched to move up from 1G #GoogleFiber internet to 2G. Sounds nice but I think it may require a special router/access point. As in, the one Google would send. They just don't get it: I would rather stick with the 1G slower internet and be in charge of my own hardware. When we got Google Fiber years ago the supplied router was an unacceptable piece of shit.

  10. #GoogleFiber would be so much better if they allowed for static IPs.

  12. I have finally figured out what was wrong with my #Nextcloud #Docker instance.

It had nothing to do with Docker and everything to do with my public IP address at home changing!

I wish #GoogleFiber would allow for static public addresses!

I might need to figure something out to either alert me to an IP address change in the future.

Even with a job, trying to run my Docker containers on a VPS isn't going to be a very viable solution for me.

I rather run them on my beefy machine here at home.

  14. We just got an email from #SpectrumCable -- presumably sent to other customers too -- that they've bumped us up to 400 Mbps (from 300), no charge.

I'm guessing that, on top of the tech just generally getting cheaper to deploy and operate, they're also feeling the heat from #GoogleFiber -- which put cable all down our street earlier this year (after a decade-plus of saying they'd be available here but never specifying exactly where or when, and then becoming available in some parts of town, but no coverage map) and is apparently now laying cable on the main road towards town, so...

....any month/year now... (I'm shivering with anticip.........)

I did a test, and it's actually closer to 500 Mbps -- but, of course, download only. Upload remains at...

    ...wait for it...

12 Mbps. (Well... 10, but with spikes up to 12.)

I believe Gfiber is up/down symmetrical, so...

  16. Just upgraded to #googlefiber 8gbs! ..for this month and then I’m downgrading to 2gbs and I still get to keep my new router which has 5x WiFi speed improvements!! Thanks google!

  17. Apparently #googlefiber has 8 Gbps in Austin now. Got an email about it, hit the upgrade button (+$25/mo), rebooted the modem, and...yep, the Cat6 run I have between fiber jack and router can pass 8 Gbps.

  28. I complained about #GeForceNow's performance on #GoogleFiber a couple weekends ago. I can't say for certain whose fault it was, but it was derfinitely one of the two, because the offending game, #Fortnite worked fine on Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Unfortunately, this was not a fix for me—which is a pity, because it LOOKS much better—because Xbox Cloud doesn't allow mouse input on ‘Fortnite’.

However, something changed in the past week and the issues with GeForce Now have completely evaporated. 😅

  31. Gigabit broadband connections are old hat. Google Fiber says it’s turning the dial up to 20 and rolling out 20 Gigabit fiber internet in select markets by the end of the year. 34. Until this weekend, I wrote off the issues with Google Fiber and game streaming due to our setup—at the old house, there was a direct ethernet connection from my Mac mini to the router, which in turn was plugged into where the fiber came into the house. Rock solid. Here, I've been plugged into the secondary Nest router, with a wireless connection to the primary.

Until this weekend, when I re-organized. I'm now on a fully wired connection again, and . . . it's still terrible.

  36. Before we moved in June, I had been playing ‘Fortnite’ on GeForce Now for over a year. I can count on the fingers of one hand how many times I had noticeable network-related issues. At the old house, we had AT&T Fiber.

Since we moved, we’ve been on a Google Fiber, and performance has been abysmal. Multiple full-on freezes per match, and often incredible lag or terrible frame rates in between—and all on a connection that purports to be three times as fast as our old AT&T one.

  37. ...Kinda considering running my own Mastodon instance now since my apartment is apparently getting #GoogleFiber.

  38. Yep, if the cable runs are short enough, you can push nearly 6 Gbps (after overhead) over Cat6.

In related news, I now have the fastest residential connectivity tier in Austin again (#GoogleFiber; tied with AT&T's top tier, albeit for significantly less money per month). Paying less for 5 Gbps symmetric than I paid last year for ~940/40 cable.
