Moving my business phone # from Google Voice to Quo. I'm excited to use Quo. GV just sucks monkey balls. I just wish it didn't take so long to port my number to Quo from GV. 5 days! Ugh! And all the regulation around Texting is insane. I do get why they have regulations, to stop spammers and all, but man, it gets expensive fast.

I've all but given up on my Google Voice number. And even if they were to modernize it w/ RCS or new features, Google would be certain to limit it to a premium feature for paying subscribers. 📞 ☎️

Stand-alone application for Google Voice
-
This message is for any of my #Blind friends who participate in trying to maintain or improve #Accessibility for #Google products and services. Could you kindly let them know that the keypad in their #GoogleVoice app for #iOS is completely unusable currently? I.E. when using #VoiceOver you can't manually enter a phone number which makes it hard to call someone who isn't already a contact.
-
Question for my #Blind friends tonight who have a #GoogleVoice phone number. When in the Google Voice app for #iOS when using #VoiceOver how do you keep the keypad active long enough to enter the full number without it trying to give you suggestions? So far I'm not a fan of this app.

I 2nd using #GoogleVoice.
I use it as a 2nd phone # for medical offices that insist on calling but won't or can't text me.
I also use itfor sites that require me to give them a phone # to use their site when I fon't want to give them my primary phone # but sine site recognize & rehect it as a virtual #, in which case I jtst don't use the site
You get a phone # that you can use to receive calls & send/receive texts via any device.
It also transcribes voice messages so that I don't have to answer any calls or listen to voicemail.

So, it's November…are we talking October 1, 2026? 🤔

The Verge: Google dusts off Google Voice and adds three-way calling. “Google is giving its Google Voice app some much-needed love after leaving it practically untouched for a long time. The company is adding a refreshed in-call interface with key call control buttons lined up in a row, plus the ability to start a three-way conference call.”

Google Voice errors are randomly blocking message delivery 📞
Why are Google Voice messages failing to go through and causing 'acceptable use' errors?
There is something very wrong with Google Voice right now.
Going back about a week now, users have been experiencing message delivery errors.
The errors pop up at random & point to Voice’s acceptable use policy.
Could be tied to industry-wide changes how texts from non-mobile numbers are handled.https://www.androidauthority.com/google-voice-errors-3527108/

I'm looking for a few suggestions:
What do you use, if anything, to manage your cellphone voicemail?

This weekend featured an event that was last on my calendar when my schedule existed primarily in analog form: the HFStival, revived Saturday at Nats Park. I knew upfront that the venue would represent an immense upgrade over RFK, but I didn’t realize how much I would appreciate seeing the Postal Service play “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” for what they say is the last time–in the city that inspired the song.
9/16/2024: With Apple Finally Welcoming RCS, Google Voice Is the Lone Holdout, PCMag
I had this piece on my story-ideas list for months if not years, and Google was predictably disappointing in continuing to ignore its self-inflicted feature neglect.
9/17/2024: What the Reinstatement of Net Neutrality Means for Higher Education, EdTech
The piece that I wrote for EdTech’s sibling publication FedTech must have left a favorable impression on both newsrooms’ parent firm Manifest, as I had an editor ask I could write an explainer about the intersection of net neutrality politics and higher education.
9/18/2024: Microsoft: Russian Disinformation Ops Pivot to Attack Harris Campaign, PCMag
Seeing Russian disinformation operatives rack up two losses in the previous two weeks (and having almost finished reading Renée DiResta’s book Invisible Rulers: The People Who Turn Lies into Reality) added to my interest in writing up this Microsoft report.
9/20/2024: Boom Supersonic’s flight plan has to be measured in years, Fast Company
More than a month after my detour to California’s high desert to check out Boom Supersonic’s operation there–followed by my needing time to quiz a couple of aviation experts about the company’s ambitions–this piece finally made its way to Fast Co.’s site. In a few days, I will write a bonus post for Patreon readers sharing some of my leftover notes from talking to Boom CEO Blake Scholl for an hour and change on that Saturday morning.
9/20/2024: Rivian CEO: ‘Extreme Lack of Choice’ Is Hampering EV Sales Growth, PCMag
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe’s talk at the Atlantic Festival offered some useful insight about the state of electric-vehicle pricing, but he also repeated an incorrect characterization of a California zero-emission car mandate that does not, in fact, ban sales of cars with fossil-fuel engines after 2035.
9/22/2024: This Week in Tech 998: Artisanal Locally-Sourced Dopamine, TWiT.tv
Joining this podcast via Zoom instead of in studio reminded me of one unsolved issue with my home office’s lighting. From 6 p.m. onwards, there wasn’t enough light streaming through the windows to illuminate my workplace adequately, then I took too long to take advantage of a sponsor break to reach for a light switch as the podcast continued for another hour and change. I can, however, take credit for helping to give this episode a title–“artisanal, locally-sourced dopamine” was my turn of phrase to describe how posting on Bluesky feels better than continuing to support a toxic ex-Twitter with free writing.
9/23/2024: I updated the TWiT entry with a direct link to the episode and context about its title.

I wish Microsoft had something like or exactly like Google voice - a free number that we could have and access but via a Microsoft account instead of a Google account.

@mhoye @brian Also, I'll be very interested in what you find out. #GoogleVoice is the single thing I worry about #Google abruptly killing the most. I have a clear alternative for everything else except that and it's one of the main things keeping me in the Google ecosystem.

Hey #telephony folks:
I have an old rotary #phone from my grandparents. I have a (personal, not corporate) #GoogleVoice account.
How do I connect them? (Without calling the phone company to add a phone line.)

Anyone else got a #GoogleVoice phone number? My texts don't seem to work to local businesses. People I know in my contacts work fine though so far

So long, Google Voice. It was nice knowing ye.

Google Should Push RCS Texting Further Than Just the iPhone
"Beeper supports RCS in its third-party texting app, which relaunched on Android following its attempts to integrate with Apple's iMessage. But Beeper had to reverse-engineer its way into integrating with Google Messages in order to make that happen. For now, it appears that Google isn't going after Beeper in the same way that Apple did when shutting off its iMessage integration."

AUSTIN
My phone has been buzzing with new-message notifications since I woke up way too early Friday morning to fly here for SXSW. That’s the fault not of my moderately overloaded social schedule, but of how the messaging choices of SXSW friends and acquaintances have spilled over into five different apps: Meta’s WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, the open-source Signal, and Google’s Messages and Google Voice apps.
And because I have landed in five different group chats–two in WhatsApp, two in Facebook Messenger, one in Signal–it’s a small miracle that I haven’t replied-all to the wrong message so far.
Then somebody asked in one of these chats: “Are there any Telegram channels?”
I think she was referring to the sharing options of a social-media app somebody else had just promoted, but I also know some people here are using that messaging app because the others apparently aren’t enough.
One takeaway this leaves me: There is so much to be said for e-mail, which works regardless of what service or app you use. It’s been there all along–as many people have observed, e-mail is the original social network–and everybody here should have access to it on every device they brought, not just smartphones. And yet my inbox has seen the fewest new messages today compared to any of the above platforms.
On the other hand, e-mail lacks typing indicators and emoji tapbacks–which brings up my other takeaway, the pathetic obsolescence of Google Voice as a messaging client.
Set aside that this sorry excuse for a texting app doesn’t support RCS and therefore sends and receives every message unencrypted; Google hasn’t even shipped the tapback support that it added to Messages for Android years ago. Lately, that evokes the joke I saw Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers throw out in a video appearance at a Comcast event last month when he reminisced about 2014-style texting: “You had to take a photo of your thumb and text that.”
Google should be embarrassed about the cobwebbed state of Google Voice. But its years-long streak of messaging-strategy incoherence suggests it long ago lost any capacity for shame in this market.
