  4. So, in a group I'm in, someone shared a campaign call calling on #Google to stop supporting the #Israel government and end its complicity in war crimes in #Gaza

The platform they're using to share these messages? #GoogleGroups of course. The email account the initial person sent the notice from? #Gmail of course.

Should I call them out and say - shouldn't we stop using a genocide-supporting #platforms?

  6. A good source of information about collections management issues is the Museum Collections Care listserv, the successor group to the CS-AAM and RC-AAM listservs: groups.google.com/g/museum-col #museums #collections #googlegroups #museumcollections

  7. Wie zur Hölle... #Spam

Was soll das? Und wie komme ich auf diese Mailingliste? 1/2

  8. I'm trying to change the email address I use for mailing lists through #GoogleGroups, ideally without unsubscribing/resubscribing for each list. Their documentation implies you can do it but what they say doesn't match what I see. More details at powerusers.codidact.com/posts/. Anyone know a way to do this?

  9. I maintain an email discussion list on google groups for a small nonprofit community group. We have about 20 participants. I'm looking to bail from google groups, mainly because of the unremovable footer in every message that gets repeated ad infinitum. Can anyone suggest an uncomplicated alternative? I want to keep it as an email listserv (not a discord-type thing, etc.) Thanks! #email #listserv #googlegroups

  10. As a fun fact, apparently I got added to a Google Group without my consent called "Zombi Porn" back in 2018, and I just noticed this. It appeared to have over 9,000 members, presumably none of which wanted to be in it. Google is truly incredible at everything they do.

  11. Is there an alternative to Google Groups that has reasonable pricing, unlike Groups.io, and that's exclusively a normal mailing list without bells and whistles?

  12. #GoogleGroups is ending support for #Usenet to combat #spam
The upcoming changes will take effect from February 22, 2024, after which users can no longer post, subscribe, or view new Usenet content through #Google Groups.
However, historical Usenet content posted before this cutoff date will remain accessible for viewing and searching on the platform.

  13. Interesting. I received a #DMARC report from AT&T and Yahoo servers complaining about email sent through an unrelated GoogleGroups list for my custom domain. Good thing I don't have reject/drop enabled on my DMARC policy.

Can you get it together #GoogleGroups and appropriately rewrite the email headers?

The first reply is so funny. "It has been FIVE years since the release of Windows 95, and that must have been long enough to find replacement apps for the ones you are using now."

Like buddy. OP said it was a standalone system. :blobfoxlaughsweat:

I wonder how Maarten might reply if that same question were made today, in an era where people continue to use definitely ancient hardware and OSes for pleasure and sport. :blobfoxcomfycomputer:

  15. "Effective February 22, 2024, Google Groups will no longer support new Usenet content. Posting and subscribing will be disallowed, and new content from Usenet peers will not appear. Viewing and searching of historical data will still be supported as it is done today."

Google once again showing they cannot be trusted to maintain things long term lmao

  16. As a #researcher, whenever I can't use a service hosted by my #university, I use #framasoft tools:
    - Framadate, not #doodle
    - Framagroupes, not #GoogleGroups for email lists
    - Framatalk, not #Zoom
    - Framateam, not #Slack
    - Framaforms, not #GoogleForms
    - Framapad rather than #GoogleDocs (if I don't need formatting, fortunately I have uni-hosted #onlyOffice + a #CNRS hosted #overleaf too, #plmLatex)
    - Framagit for #git, not #github/ #gitlab

  17. The last more-or-less full work week of the year is about to start, and I know I’ll be working the week after that to meet the last deadlines I have in 2023.

12/11/2023: Teens Are Online ‘Almost Constantly,’ Usually on These Apps, PCMag

I got an advance look at this Pew Research Center study on teenage social-media use and found it enlightening–including the part where the teenagers in the study group said they were spending slightly less time on almost every social-media app compared to last year.

12/12/2023: Google Maps Location Data to Be Stored on Your Device, Not the Cloud, PCMag

Google surprised me with this announcement, in a good way. I needed other people–for example, Electronic Frontier Foundation general counsel Jennifer Lynch–to point out how this move could spell the end of “geofence warrants” asking for Google Maps records of everybody in a particular place at a particular time.

12/13/2023: 8th Grade Career Day, Thomas Jefferson Middle School

My last speaking gig of the year had me explaining the business I have chosen to three classes’ worth of eighth graders, with compensation in the form of free coffee and breakfast pastries.

(Patreon readers got a detailed recap of this event, including some of the smarter questions the students asked.)

12/15/2023: AT&T: Spam Texts Are Down By a Third, PCMag

After talking to one of AT&T’s executives about the drop in spam-text reports they’d seen, I wanted to see if the other two nationwide carriers or its regulators at the Federal Communications Commission had seen similar trends. Sadly, they had not.

12/16/2023: End of an Era: Google Groups to Drop Usenet Support, PCMag

The second bit of unexpected Google news this week took me all the way back to almost 30 years ago, when my online experience began with exploring Usenet on my dial-up AOL account.
