  2. @bigjsl Amazing. Did you by any chance read the excellent Ghost Empire by Richard Fidler before visiting Istanbul? Its a very comprehensive but digestible history of that amazing city. Highly recommended #goodread

  3. The book "A Life on Our Planet" is a hard (as in "tough") read, but well worth the effort. In fact, you should read it!

Sir David Attenborough recently turned 100. He has seen the world around him change. Not just in the general sense, but from an environmental, social, and financial perspective.

  4. "The Elements of Marie Curie: How the Glow of Radium Lit a Path for Women in Science" by Dava Sobel, one of
    my favorite writers since "Longitude".

Not only a brilliant scientist with 2 Nobel prizes, but also a forerunner for women in science, Marie Curie unfortunately only understood the medical risks of radioactivity after it undermined her own health.

  5. I'm reading John Varley's "Titan" for the first time, and heck is it a ride.
I'm not sure if he just had an awful lot of imagination or was high as a kite. But I love it.
Even though I first thought it was a copy of Ringworld.

  6. "The pattern is everywhere: Condition people to rely on the system. Erode their vigilance. Then, when something breaks, point to the terms of service and blame them for not paying attention." #goodread theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/

  7. "A Life on Our Planet: My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future" by David Attenborough (one of my heroes) is not a book that leaves a warm, fuzzy feeling. The future looks grim if we don't start behaving differently, starting today. Written with clarity and conviction.

  8. Fun book! And the first book I've read that mentions Mastodon in the Acknowledgements:

"My late-night friends on Mastodon offered a lot of great ideas about what kind of personality a self-executing contract would have."

  10. Accessory to War, strongly recommend. In many ways it's frustrating to get through for those of us familiar with the concept of where our tax dollars are spent in the US. Where if we only increased our budget for science by a couple of percentage points we could reap solutions to many of the problems that plague us.

The concept that space can be mastered and controlled by one military is laughable on its face. Yet governments around the world are trying to be "first".

That said Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Avis Lang really have put together a great walk-through of history up to modern-day and the present as it relates to this on-going conflict. One take-away for me is this idea that there is a sub-section of the human species that is evolving more quickly and rapidly than the rest. It's clearly obvious if you look around and it leaves me wondering if the modern day version of a human viewed Neanderthals in similar fashion.
