  1. My first visit to Parkes, home of Australia's famous radio telescope (AKA The Dish) and to an annual Elvis Festival, is also home to a car museum, an Elvis memorabilia exhibition owned by a former Wiggle, some lovely architecture, the first vertical grain silos built by the Commonwealth and, yesterday, the inaugural Goodness Gravel Parkes event (what I was here for).

  6. I spent the weekend in the northern, NSW town of Bulahdelah with my cycling buddy, Andrew.

We were attending another Goodness Gravel event. An 80km, mostly dirt road course over Manning Hill to Bunyah and back.

It rained the night before and for much of the day - a misty drizzle or 'mizzling' as my mum used to say - which turned the course to mud.

It was one of those satisfying 'experiences' on which one looks back fondly.

    Going back next year.

  7. With a cycling buddy, I drove 900km to the small town of Glen Innes for a gravel ride in the Northern Tablelands in a region of northern New South Wales called New England.

I've never been here before and, to be honest, it's a lot like the Southern Highlands which is much closer. It's also very British with lots of Scottish and Welsh references.

The ride was organised by Goodness Gravel and was a much smaller and more personal ride than the Classic series.

We completed the 75km ride in good time and good spirits, despite some strong and relentless headwinds.

We've got a few more days here and are planning some riding/exploring tomorrow.

  8. I took part in the second running of Goodness Gravel in Mogo on Saturday. There were three course options and I chose the middle one - 75km with 1600m of ascent.

The course was great - a well-marshalled route through the bush between Mogo and Nelligen. Some tough climbing in there too but with spectacular views.

I took my Specialized Roubaix with set of 32mm Panaracer gravel tyres. I had a pinch-flat puncture and a minor mechanical failure but, considering the terrain, the bike did well.

Riding with friends in a beautiful setting and challenging yourself. A weekend well spent.
